I did check with my dentist. He didn't know anything about the products on the market and said it isn't a good idea to use them. When I questioned him further, he didn't have a reason for the statement. So.... I questioned him even more and talked about the ingredients. The herbal snuff that have molasses are a bad idea due to the increased risk of tooth decay and gum loss. The ones that have hard sugar like substances (sorbitol and xylitol) are harmful to the gums. The ones with lobelia (indian tobacco) and the ones that add nicotine are bad. He recommended using a soft herbal chew with glycerine. He also recommended using ones that have a larger particle size, so less is left in the mouth after doing so. So in the end, he did recommend herbal snuff, but didn't know enough about the industry to recommend an actual product. He confirmed that my choice (edited out of my first post, but not one found in local stores) is fine.

I quit using tobacco snuff (Skoal Mint was my poison) two months ago. This is at least the 20th time I have tried to quit, but I have never made it to 2 months before! Hoorah!! The hardest part for me wasn't the nicotine withdrawl, but the need to keep my mouth busy. The biggest help was finding an herbal snuff that I liked. I tried all the ones available in the stores and hated them all. I would use them for a week or two and then have the need for a real dip. It tastes and feels like Skoal, so it satisfies that craving. I started using it everytime I wanted a dip (about 15 times a day) and have gradually reduced it to about 2 per day. I just need to make sure I have plenty on hand.

Hello iquitdipping, and welcome to the SSC! Congratulations on your decision to give up snuff. I used Skoal occasionally when I chewed. I also used the herbal snuff as an aid in quitting. I think it is a good thing if it is helping you quit, because, chances are probably pretty good that the herbal alternative is less harmful than Skoal. Afterall, there are too many chemicals to list found in every form of tobacco. Melanie is correct, however, in that it wouldn't be a bad idea to check in with your doctor if you haven't already. But if you have gone from 15 dips of tobacco per day, to 2 dips of alternative, then I think congratulations are definitely in order! Great job and keep it up!!! :) Looking forward to seeing you at the beach! ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/21/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 470 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 9,881 Amount Saved: $517 Life Gained: Days: 60 Hrs: 20 Mins: 6 Seconds: 55

Hello iquitdipping, good to see you're still at it! Congratulations! I never heard of the "alternative" dips with lobelia (indian tobacco) and the ones that add nicotine. I do know that there are quite a few varieties out there, however. The one I used served its purpose for me, although my dentist did also tell me that eventually I should give it up as well since basically any foreign body placed between cheek and gum can cause unwanted gumline irritation. I wouldn't hesitate for a moment, however, to pick up a can of herbal (mine was sold over the counter at most grocery/convenience stores) if I thought I was in a high-risk-of-relapse situation. I was able to go fishing this last weekend without even a passing thought of chew, which is actually quite amazing. I don't even think I realized until after I got back that the thought of having a dip never even crossed my mind! I think I've reached the point where, I just don't use dip anymore, I'm fine with that, and my mind seems to have nearly forgotten. Again, congratulations to you! Keep up the excellent quit! :) You must be around 2-1/2 months now? You should post your stats for us all to see! It's fun to look at that and see how many days, hours, minutes, seconds of life you've given yourself back (based on whatever formula the system uses) and watch the progress of "Cigarettes Not Smoked" or "Dips Not Taken" in our case!
