Driving and not smoking

Mama, I found that using a straw cut to the size of a cig. and fold the top, so when you suck on it ,its just like a cig. it really works I only use it in the car. Sheba 55

Mama: Driving was a major trigger for me. I live in Dallas and I drive 1 hour to work and 1 hour home in constant traffic jams...I smoked all the way to work and all the way home...so I can difinitely relate. Trust me on this one...You will get use to it, I promise...Probably after about 2 weeks, it got a little eaisier. Now, I very seldom even think about smoking while I am driving..My car smells so good! There are no ashes everywhere! Its great! You are doing great by pre planning before you get into your car..Thats the only way to over come this...Just take it one car ride at a time. Reward yourself with a pat on the back when you get back home for not smoking in the car....Before long, you wont even think about it.....Stay Strong! You have made a life saving decision! (I smoked for 34 years. I love being a non smoker. You will too) Brenna My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/2/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 484 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 9,688 Amount Saved: $2178 Life Gained: Days: 56 Hrs: 12 Mins: 55 Seconds: 43

I once read an article or a post about dealing with these common triggers -- driving, eating, waking up, etc. The article said that through habit, we have trained our subconscience to act as our Personal Assistant. Our PA runs around making sure we remember to brush our teeth, look in the rearview mirror occasionally, drink water, and so on. Our Personal Assistant also is very much on the job reminding us to smoke when we wake up, after we eat, when we get in the car, when we talk on the phone. When we quit smoking, our PA is still on the job trying to remind us to smoke! It's like the Personal Assistant didn't get the memo! After a few times of NOT smoking when we drive, the Personal Assistant finally gets the point. It gives up and goes on about reminding us of other things we need to do. So just keep prompting that Personal Assistant -- it will eventually get it! how about a book on tape or cd??? cut some straws the size of cigarettes to hold in your hand....or use a full size one and "play" drums to the music (only when stopped!! LOL) you will get better at doing without the smokes the longer you persist in distracting yourself. hang tough....kick butt ;) katy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/4/2002 Smoke-Free Days: 1609 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 64,377 Amount Saved: $8849.5 Life Gained: Days: 209 Hrs: 22 Mins: 11 Seconds: 43
