Pregnant and Still Smoking...Help Please

17 years ago 0 296 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Lisa, I feel so compelled to tell you my story. I am almost 2 months into my quit. I smoked for more than 20 years. I have a 20 month old little girl, she was my first child that I became pregnant with when I was 33 years old. I tried very hard to stop when I found out I was pregnant. I would make it a few hours and then be going crazy. I cut way back but I did not ever quit threw out my entire pregnancy. I had a very easy pregnancy. Everything looked great, I felt great, baby looked great and then all of a sudden. 5 weeks before my due date my water broke. I was in a panic, my baby wasn't due for another month. I went right to the hospital and 20 minutes later I delivered a beautiful little girl. She was perfect except she was SO SMALL. She only weighed 4lbs 12oz's. The doctor said to me I was lucky it was a girl because there lungs develop faster than boys. They kept us in the hospital for 2 days. Baby Niki did very well and was eating well and I thank god that I got lucky. They sent off my placenta to test it to see if there was a reason my water broke premature. The results showed nothing so the only other reasonable explanation was my smoking. Little Niki is now 20 months old. She still only weighs 21 lbs. She is in the 3% bracket in weight. She never and still isn't a big eater and for the first year she never ate enough to move up to a 8oz bottle. I'm considering having another baby in the near future. There is no way im going to play with another life that grows inside me. I got very lucky with my little girl. Next time I might not be as lucky. Meece, You will see your physician on Saturday? Discuss your strong desire to quit smoking with him/her. It's a great decision, especially if you are expecting a baby. Then you will have two things to celebrate - you will be improving the health of two people. You will need support and that's why the SSC is here, but you do need the advice of your doctor with regard to the pregnancy. Why not try quitting today, then you won't have to fear it. Just tell yourself that this is it, there is no option to going back to smoking (after all, you're not missing anything!). Take good care of yourself and start drinking lots of water and taking deep breaths. Prepare by using the tools at the left (glove compartment, quit program workbook) and rid your house of all smoking materials. Hi Meece1971 - There are no accidents, there aren't coincidences. This is the time for you to Quit (if you are ready, of course, pregnant or not). The question is what will make this Quit different than the ones you had before. You must own your Quit and protect it w/everything you have at all times. Period. Spend as much time as possible here on this site reading new and old posts. Ask questions. Ground yourself and do some soul searching. Quitting is tough stuff and you can do it - we're all doing it. One day at a time. This is not medical advise and there is a site very similar to the stop smoking centre, this site is oriented to pregnant mothers who are stopping smoking the site is available on line you can get there by typing www dot pregnets dot org (of coure using punctuation instead og words) Their home page copy: Mission: To improve the health of mothers, fetuses, babies and children. Goals: To eliminate smoking in pregnant and postpartum women by increasing the capacity to quit and stay quit using a woman centred model of care. Hi Meece, You should read everyday about the dangers of smoking during pregnancy. Before I quit, I would read and read about the dangers of smoking at Whyquit.com; and, of course, read about the benefits of quitting. It will strengthen your resolve to stay quit; for you and your unborn child. I have 4 children. I did not smoke for the first one, but i did smoke for the last three. 2 of them have slight breathing problems when they over exert themselves..the 3rd one was born 2 months premature (one of the negative affects directly related to smoking). Thank god, he was alright and is now a healthy teenager, but HOW could I have put his life in danger like that? The only answer is drug addiction.. You can stop smoking...you can. Meece, Not much to add. You KNOW you need to quit smoking. You need even more to quit while being pregnant. You don't have to be a doctor to know that smoking and pregnancy are not a good mix. Smoking cuts down on the amount of oxygen the baby needs for growth. That is just one negative to smoking while pregnant. The next thing you need to do is to ask, beg, plead with your husband that he takes his smoking outside!!! Clear out the house completely of all smoking material and insist that your smoking friends do not smoke in your house anymore!! You are making a tremendously important decision for your and your babies life. See it through all the way. This is your golden opportunity to move forward out of the darkness of addiction into the light of freedom and better health. Quitting isn't a lot of fun and I can assure you that you will probably have a few days where you are not a happy camper.. but the end result of being free is like nothing you have ever experienced! Trust me on that one! There are great links here for you to check out. Please read and educate yourself AND your husband. This is a joint process. Best wishes. [b]Be Strong. Be Smart. Meece, a lot of women naturally quit smoking when they become pregnant. The taste and smell are just too much and they just lose the desire. That's what happened to me. I didn't smoke through 2 pregnancies, but it certainly wasn't a conscious decision. We know so much more now than we did back then. We know that chemicals, certain medicines and some foods can hurt our babies. It is your responsibility as a mother to do everything to protect that new life growing inside of you. And if it turns out you're not pregnant, you will be a much healthier mother in the future if you quit smoking now. I find it interesting that you sound more scared of quitting smoking than of being pregnant. I think I was the opposite! In any case, rejoice in your new life without cigarettes! What you have here is a no-brainer. According to a study:
"Carbon Monoxide in smoke reduces the amount of oxegen in an unborn child's blood, while nicotine restricts the blood flow from the mother to the unborn. Results have shown that smoking retards the growth of the fetus, resulting in low-birth weight. Smoking also increases the risk premature birth and infant mortality."
With all that said, good luck tomorrow.
