Hi Breaking Free, you and I quit almost the same time, you seem wonderfully upbeat about it all, wish i could share your optimism as well as your quit date !!
You can have that optimism. All you have to do is choose too. It is that hard or that simple depending on how you look at it. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Lilly, The key here is to stop thinking of smoking as something that you have to sacrifice. Cigs are not a habit. They are an addiction. We crave the nicotine and inhale it to calm us because we don't have it. Cigs are not a seatbelt in case of a catastrophe. They are the catastrophe. You are avoiding something that is harmful to you. You are doing yourself a favor. You are not sacrificing the cigs. They were sacrificing you. Stay Strong. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Hi Lilly, Try adopting a mantra. Recite it to yourself every time you feel tempted. Carry a list of the reasons why you quit smoking or a list of your accomplishments thus far. I'm glad to hear you made it to a new smoke free day. Keep persevering! You're doing great! Danielle ______________________________ The SSC Support Team

Yesterday I made it to three weeks and was over the moon! hardly craved all day and felt great Today I have had one hell of a day - one of the worst since I started, the cravings have been awful and I was ready to buy some cigs just to take the cravings away, Why is it now harder than yesterday is a question I can't answer and no one can!! No-one told me it was going to be easy, it is bloody hard as hell, but not as hard as having to sit there while a doctor says you have so long to live because we smoked, not as hard as letting your loved one watch whilst you fade away. We have a choice which hard choice we decide to go with Me - I'm picking the hard choice of stopping smoking and it may be hard but I'm going to get there in the end Just keep telling yourself that one day it will be easy, when that day will be none of us know and we just need to keep going till we get there Good luck and for every bad day you have think of it as a step closer to the good days Joanne My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/3/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 22 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 563 Amount Saved: 110 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 23 Mins: 40 Seconds: 23

Hang on! I'm a queen of self-defeating talk. That little devil on my shoulder whispers unkind things to me a lot, and sometimes in really sneaky ways. If it's not "isn't it time to smoke?" then it's "my life is SO HARD and I'm SO STRESSED," which leads us back to, "isn't it time to smoke?" :) This sounds silly, but naming my nicodemon has really helped. It's like I can actually see myself having a conversation with this chemical. His name is Vlad. Sometimes I get that condescending tone with him that a bouncer at a night club might use. "I'm sorry, fella, but I'm going to have to show you out." Sometimes I use my Mom voice with him. "Not now, Vlad. After I've posted and gotten fifteen replies, then we'll see about smoking." Sometimes I use a cop voice. "Mr. Vlad, this is a no-smoking section. You'll have to move along, now." It helps me to take the crave a little less seriously, to see it as something I can face and that will back down. You're making one of the most important changes you can possibly make for your long-term health. You're also giving up something that has helped you through whatever difficulties life has thrown at you while you were a smoker. You can focus on the giving up part, or you can focus on the wonderful gift you're giving yourself. Choose the latter. Choose the latter. Choose the latter. Life is so good. Take a breath of fresh air, and notice that you can smell it now. (There are honeysuckles blooming in the woods behind my house -- I've never enjoyed them more than now.) Peel and eat an orange slowly and carefully, and enjoy how fresh it tastes and that you can fully taste it now. If you have kids, kiss them. If you don't, kiss your pet. Kiss your mom. Kiss somebody, because you're giving them hours and days and years more of yourself, because you won't have died of some awful disease. If you're a woman of faith, pray -- for help and in thanksgiving. Keep coming back here. Read everything you can find. Read the posts that seem to apply to you and the ones that don't, because even if they don't apply now, they might later. Stay close by, where there are lots of people who know exactly what you're going through. You can do this, and you're worth every minute of it. Fear Less Lov

I have also just reached the 2 week quit mark. I miss smoking a little bit when I mourn it and treat smoking as something that I have lost. Instead, I have altered my mindset about smoking. I did not lose anything. I have gained many things. I got rid of smoking. I now believe that smoking does not cure boredom, help me to concentrate, feel relaxed or anything positive. Instead, I now see smoking as it actually is; A dirty little weed that has been making me feel uncomfortable when I don't have it for so many years. It made me stink, my fingers were yellow, I couldn't taste my food properly...SO MANY THINGS...

Hiya Lilly! I want to agree with Breaking Free: Don't "hope" this will go well. Make SURE it does! If you BELIEVE you will get through it, then you damn well will. Prepare now. If you are worried about the environment - print out the reasons you've quit or other inspirational things and take them with you to stick around where you need to. For me - I printed out the 'Junkie Thinking' thread and have it taped basically right in front of my face where I see it all day long. It's helped me a lot. Take in candies, licorice, anything and everything. TELL THEM YOU'VE QUIT. Both so that you are accountable to them, and so that hopefully they will respect it enough to keep it from around you. Make this quit work - WORK for it. BELIEVE. You can make it!! Hiya Lilly! Be Strong! Seriously, I cannot tell you enough that I know that you CAN do this, you just have to believe it yourself. I never thought I could quit. Frankly, even thinking about it scared the frickin bejeezus outta me. Butguess what, I've done it. I'm doing it right now. And it's no where NEAR as bad as *I* led myself to believe it would be. Here is a link to the thread I mentioned: Junkie Thinking Thread A lot of that really spoke to me, and keeping it around all day helped keep me stronger. Stay in touch and know that we WILL help you through this. I'll darn well drag you if I need to! :) Bingo My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/23/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 33 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 676 Amount Saved: $99 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 20 Mins: 19 Seconds: 27

Hiya Lilly! Believe me, I really do know what you are talking about. One thing that really helped me is a quote that has been floating around here for a little while and really struck a chord with me:
From 4my2girls: What Consumes Your Thoughts Controls Your Life
I really had to stop and think about that. I was going around constantly THINKING about 'I am quitting smoking. I am quitting smoking. I can do this. I can. I can. I can.'. Well, that's just great and all... really. However, it also meant I was just CONSTANTLY thinking about it. Once I relaxed and just let myself quit and stopped having it be the only thing going through my mind, I actually felt a LOT better. I really don't know if any of this makes any sense. I hope it does. However, it is something that really helped me. If nothing else, just please take heart that things constantly DO get better. Honest! :) Bingo My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/23/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 32 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 647 Amount Saved: $96 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 15 Mins: 14 Seconds: 46
