Thanks Cobenfan and Breakingfree. Cobenfan you made me laugh. I'm so glad I'm not in the land of cubicles anymore. Whoever came up with that brilliant idea anyway? Send it upstairs for review. I cannot believe that I have not sent this upstairs. I send EVERYTHING upstairs. Even stuff other people wouldn't dream of sending up there for review. Sometimes the answers are right there and we just dont' see them. Thank you. Lady, Part of life is dealing with abnoxious, rude and hard-to-deal-with people... yours is your father... mine is my whole family! :p Be thankful that yours is just one person. Yes, he might be hard to deal with at times, but you did it just fine before and you'll do it just fine again. Try talking to him... tell him that you don't want the door open. Tell him that you're not asking him not to smoke, but when he does, he must close the door so that the smoke doesn't get in the house. Just closing the door might not be enough of a "hint" for him... he might need some verbal communication. Yes, he SHOULD get the point by you just closing the door, but oftentimes, people don't pick up on subtle hints and need outright frankness. Try talking to him. See what happens. Next, while you're talking to him, find out how his trip went. He can't yell and scream at the boys if he's busy talking to you about his trip. He might be fussy and yelling because he doesn't have anyone to talk to. I know sometims we wish things were the way they were, but they're not and we just have to suck it up and deal with it. You're strong. I know you are and I know that you will handle this situation with dignity and civility because that's the kind of person you are. :) Crave the Quit! Lady, you say he'll be crushed if you ask him to move. Yet he's perfectly okay with living in your house, stinking it up and exposing you and the kids to his second hand smoke, all the while knowing you don't want him smoking. I have to wonder just why he would be crushed, since it appears it wouldn't be out of concern for you or the kids. IMO, it's time for an ultimatum. No smoking or pack it up. You'd be happier, there wouldn't be all the fussing between him and the kids (why is an adult arguing with a 12 year old?), and the air would be cleaner. All around win for you. Maybe you should close the door and LOCK it! Padlocked from the inside would be a good thing.
