Hello, I think we can all empathise with your words but in actual fact cigarettes are our worst enemies rather than best friends. Would you really cherish a friend that stole all your hard earned cash, made you stink, took up 1-2 hours of your time every single day, made you a social outcast and, worst of all, probably sent you to an early grave? If that was a real person you would avoid him/her like the plague! Yes it is hard to do, but not impossible. There are many shining examples here of how we can overcome the powerful addiction of smoking and for many of us the mere fact that we found this forum has meant the difference between success and failure. Firstly you need to get yourself into the right frame of mind, then set a date to quit and then give it everything you have got. Use the program tools on the left in order to prepare yourself and come here often, read posts from others and shout if you need any help or encouragement. Hi there Angel 42, Firstly you need to understand why you find it so hard to 'quit' smoking, I don't think you do - otherwise you wouldn't be referring to smoking as your best friend ! Probably the quickest way for you to understand is to read Allen Carr's book "Easy way to stop smoking" plus stick around here. Tap in to the wealth of knowledge here & read, read, read. y o u m u s t w a n t t o s t o p s m o k i n g ;) good luck My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 520 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 13,003 Amount Saved: $3380 Life Gained: Days: 74 Hrs: 12 Mins: 42 Seconds: 1

Hi Angel 42 - Sometimes thinking about quitting is harder on us than just DOING IT. SO, I think it best to set a quit date just far enough ahead to read about the quit program tools on the left, also read some of the posts here on SSC. THEN, JUST DO IT. My mantra has been N.O.P.E. (not one puff ever) because it was just that one puff that ruined all of my other quits. Sometimes it is very difficult to talk yourself out of taking that puff but you can do it when you think of all the positives in quitting. Come here often and let us know how you are doing. Angel, You have gotten some outstanding advice! All I can add is this thread called "Missing my left arm". Start a list of all the things you DON'T like about smoking and all the reasons why you want to quit. Until your quit date, try to see each cigarette clearly and what it is doing to you. Shortening your life, strengthening your addiction, smelling up your hair and clothes. Yuck. If you want to, you CAN do this. Allow me to repeat something I published here recently...
Carbon Monoxide in tobacco smoke reduces the oxygen level in the fetus' (unborn child) blood, while nicotine restricts the blood flow leading from you to your fetus. Smoking retards the growth of the fetus, resulting in low birth weight. Smoking also increases the risk of premature birth and mortality.
This factoid is taken from the Dangers of Smoking information provided by ASTROVENT. What else do we have to talk about? Good luck and I know you will do the right thing.
