Stopped smoking - binge drinking instead?

18 years ago 0 425 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Thank you, RD-Man, Gammy45 and MegRs for your encourgement and advice. I will be very careful with alcohol, do as Gammy45 adviced, drink a lot of water. I am very proud of my 84 non-smoking days and for me to even playing with the thought of smoking is far, far away. I have been smoking for more than 35 years and I know that if I only smoke 1 cigarette, I will be back to smoking in no time at all. I also know that if I put myself back to smoking again, I will never be able to quit. If I can't make it this time, I can't make it at all. But I know I can do it this time:) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/22/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 84 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,269 Amount Saved: $378 Life Gained: Days: 9 Hrs: 20 Mins: 59 Seconds: 8

Thank you, Zip and Joluvshugs. I understand that both of you responded and gave advice because you care and I thank you for that. I have done a lot of research about this and it is NOT uncommon that you drink more alcohol when you quit smoking. Maybe I used the wrong word "bing drinking" - English is not my first language, so I might have used it wrong. Anyway - I know that I need to be very careful when/If I drink alcohol, but I believe I have learned my lesson. My quit is very importend to me, and if I need to totally stay away from drinking - I will. Joluvshugs, I don't understand what you are saying here: " i'm sure you have another "relapse" in you...do you have another recovery?" I don't have any problems with not drinking alcohol at all, it can go months without me drinking more that a couple of glass of wine. Hi Sunflower, Please be very careful with this. My last quit was 2 years ago, and I noticed that my drinking started to become less and less controlled. It took several months of drinking to the point of blacking out but not smoking before I realized that I was using one addiction to cover for another- and the only way it worked for me was to get treatment for the drinking first. Now I have been alcohol free for 20 months and smoke free for 80 days. Point is, I really believe you have to be exceptionally careful with your drinking during the first few months of your quit. Most people can do this without any trouble. If you are one of us who cannot, that could signal another problem. I am NOT suggesting you go back to smoking, I am saying that you are showing signs of another addiction and please be very careful, and seek help if you need it. Having said that, I am so proud of you! Congratulations on 80+ days without smoking now, and I am right behind you on our way to the beach! Sunflower, Yes, it is possible to loose your quit while drinking. I know of one person that did that with a 3 year quit. He always played card on Friday night with his buddies. Well on this Friday night he came home drinking and smoking. The man I am telling you about is my husband. And within a week he was smoking his regular 2 pks a day. Well to make a long story short he died 1 year ago this past March, of lung cancer. He found out on March 8, and died on March 31st. I'm not telling you this to scare you, I telling you it is possible to loose your quit while drinking, and that I care for you. Do you think you need help with your drinking? Please get it if you do. Your quit of 70 days is huge, please protect it with all you have. You won't be sorry, it is so worth it.... Blessing sent to you, SUNSHINE My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/7/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 117 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,989 Amount Saved: $409.5 Life Gained: Days: 16 Hrs: 19 Mins: 57 Seconds: 39

Sunflower, Good to hear from you, and know that you have every thing under control, and that you will take action with the drinking. I was really concerned about you yesterday. I see that you like to cook, and are eating healthier. The walking will take you a long way. So congratulations on your 70 days. Enjoy the cruise ship, it won't be long before you will be at the beach. I too have heard that it is not unusual to drink more while stopping smoking. It is the same thing with food, your hands and mouth need something to do and without a cig in either one, replacement of alcohol and/or food is easily accelerated. Straws are a good replacement. I have found that if I have a glass of water also, I will drink the water and not so much of the alcohol. Drinking more water helps heal also. Sunflower, Yes, I have heard of one other person tell me that he did the same thing. Actually, it's very common... it's substituting one addiction for another and it's very unhealthy... not to mention dangerous for your quit! Coming from someone who threw a quit away at a bar because of drinking too much, I know first hand how easy it is to give in to the addiction when you're not sober enough to combat the junkie talk. But, even if that doesn't happen, it's still not healthy. You might want to seek some help from a support group for that such as AA. I hope everything turns out OK for you. Crave the Quit! Sunflower - You threw it out so here's my opinion.... Binge drinking is a problem and you need to address it now. If not yesterday. Anytime a person drinks to an "out of control" state it's substance abuse. To much of a good thing is not a good thing. Your quit is huge as others have stated. That PROVES you're able to control the addict within. I think you need to focus the same energy you've focused on your cigarette quit toward the drinking. I think you need to set yourself some limits and stick to them. Talk to someone if you need to. Do whatever it takes. Binge drinking is not healthy. It's obvious you're thinking about it and it seems like you want to do something about it. So do it. You know you can. Keep us posted. We wouldn't post replies if we didn't care.
