"Close" only counts with horseshoes, handgrenades and atom bombs. You didn't smoke, that's what counts.
Don't worry about the weight right now. Eat healthy, not junk, but don't worry about a few pounds right now. Pulling all the plugs at once is a really bad idea :8o:.
Quitting smoking should certainly help you heal faster. If nothing else, you'll get more rest because you won't be having to get up for a smoke.
