Crystal, you are just trying to replace the smoking with food. If you can not smoke try not eating. I know its hard but it can be done, if you feel like a smoke and cant have one you eat, so try walking or reading or soaking in the tub, anything to take your mind off smoking/eating. It is a little more work but it can be done, I did and am glad I did. Hi Crystal - I just wanted to mirror Trudy's advice. Eating foods that are no fat no protein and only carbs will shoot your blood sugar up quickly but cause a big surge of insulin and thus cause it to drop quickly again. You might be better off to try to balance each snack or meal so that it contains some fat and protein also. For example, a half a sandwich with some cheese and a little mayo might keep you feeling full way longer than raisins or another carb-only snack. I know it works that way for me anyway. Hi Crystal -- Please don't panic. One thing that nicotine does is release stored sugar from your cells into your blood. This is part of why we eat less when smoking and feel less hungry. After you quit it takes some time for your body to adjust and keep your blood sugar level where it should be. The first while after you quit, your blood sugar keeps dropping and that's why you feel so hungry -- you're not imagining it. Your body really IS needing you to feed it something. I have read that eating smaller more frequent meals early in your quit is really helpful, and my experience tells me that's true. Don't despair...that crazy I-have-to-eat-all-the-time feeling did not last for me and probably will not for you either. (sounds like you and I had similar smoking patterns). One thing you MUST do is keep your blood sugar levels up. Please eat something every couple of hours...not cake, cookies, potato chips, etc, but raisins, fruit, hardboiled egg, carrots, yogurt, cheese. Crystal, Congratulations on one day and welcome to our support community. Please take the time to look through the site and its tools. Our members can really make a difference to your journey. Take the time to speak with your doctor to come up with a plan for eating and exercise that will work for you. Smaller portions and low calorie snacks can assist you. Almost all smokers notice this. You may tend to eat more than you used to. Your body's absorption of food is improved as well, so you will gain more nourishment even if you don't eat more.
