Wow, I am glad everything worked out! Your experience has already helped. I am off to work out...and NOT smoke!

softmtnrain, WOW. I am so glad to hear that you survived this!! It does sound scary, something that is excruciating but you are not smoking while this is happenning...really makes you wonder what exactly is happenning to our poor bodies as that nicodemon thrashes us with that horrible smoke!!! I would suppose it's internal torture. That is definitely for sure something I have no desire to do: internally torture myself. So I am standing firm and commit to my quit, even though yesterday was aweful for me, it wasn't aweful enough to make me want to smoke and today isn't either! Thanks for sharing this!!! Many Blessings! Thank you so much for sharing your story! I am sorry you have had to go through this, but understand completely why you had too. At least there was a light at the end of your tunnel. Not too bright though! Happy Friday to one and all! Most of you may not know me, as I dont post often on the SSC, but I am golfermans wife. I just saw Bubbas post regarding a personal life and death situation and thought Id post one of my own. Like Bubbas experience, I hope that you will take my own experience to heart and that it might help someone who is struggling to hold onto their quit. On 3/27/06, I presented myself to the hospital emergency room with severe right-sided chest pain that radiated into my shoulder. I couldnt sit, lie, stand or move without excruciating pain. I am a registered nurse, and if you guys havent heard, we nurses tend to diagnose ourselves (smile). I walked into the emergency room and told the staff that I thought I was having a gallbladder attack. A few tests later, I was told that they were admitting me because I had bilateral pulmonary emboli (2 blood clots in my lungs). I would have made a lousy doctor, so Ive decided to stop diagnosing myself! LOL! Pulmonary emboli can be a life-threatening, fatal event. Its quite common, but difficult to diagnose. Unfortunately, most of what they know about pulmonary emboli has been learned through postmortem exams (autopsies). I am one of the lucky people who managed to survive it. Basically what happens is a blood clot forms somewhere in the body, most of the time in the legs. The clot breaks off and travels through the blood stream, through the heart and into the lungs arterial circulation. If the clot is too big, it can totally stop the circulation that supplies the lungs with oxygen. The clot on my right side was described as large. Obviously not large enough to totally cut off my circulation, but had I still been a smoker (nicotine constricts the blood vessels, thus compromising the circulation), I truly believe I would not have survived this. My quit was solid before this happened, but this has certainly sealed it for me. There is no way that I would ever put another cigarette to my lips again. I feel very fortunate to have been spared, so Im not going to take my health for granted ever again. If youre struggling in the early days of a quit, or youre flirting with the thoughts of having just one. Stop and seriously think about what smoking does to your body. Do you really

I think they call it denial, Lindsey. Unfortunately, I too played the denial game when I smoked. I had to justify my reasons for continuing to smoke. Sad, isn't it? It's too bad that some people feel offended to hear how "not smoking" probably saved someone's life. I'm a nurse, yet I admit to having some of these same feelings. I didn't want to hear all that sad, depressing, "oh woe is me" tales of the evils of smoking. I'm just thankful I quit when I did...otherwise I might not be sitting here telling the tale. I'm sure you feel the same way. Have a great weekend! -Sharon

Bubba, There will always be those who are paralyzed with fear of quitting. They cannot imagine giving up such a demanding part of their life. When they get sick from their smoking, and they will, they will attribute it to everything else in their life but smoking. They have made their beds and they will sleep in them. Albert Einstein once said.. "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." That really sums up those smokers who badmouth quitters or who stick their heads in the proverbial sand and can't deal with quitting.
