One man's opinion on "the quit meter"

18 years ago 0 456 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
To the contrary, I think that Fairy was saying that he drank one beer and returned to not drinking... or he smoked one cigarette and returned to not smoking.. Not that he followed the worst case scenario.. had a free keg party in Cancun, invited the Marlboro company as a sponser.. cartons and 5ths for door prizes and the grand prize.. lifetime supply of smokes and booze of your choice... lol I keep thinking about the social smoker thing.. keeps making me sad that it is just a fantasy.. lol I'm a nonsmoker.. and I can party without smoking.. and I will maybe next summer.. lol (when I'm ready) Christine My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/1/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 52 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,313 Amount Saved: $182 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 13 Mins: 27 Seconds: 55

It seems that if you haven't slipped that the meter is your best friend and positive reminder of your success. If you have slipped it seems like a constant reminder of your failure. I had never even contemplated how negatively or positively this meter could affect someone. There is something called beauracratism. It is when a person working as a beauracrat forgets that the goal is to help people and is more interested in protecting policy than achieving the goal which is to help the people. After reading butterfly's post.. I want to lean toward making the days less important and the quit more important. Kind of like.. losing a battle but, winning the war. Again, perhaps they should change it to :Days since I quit. Good discussion. Well, I think if someone smoked one cigarette and then hated themselves and tucked their tails and regretted it.. I think it should be forgiven. They have not started back to smoking fulltime or anything.. We are human beings fighting a deep addiction and facing all that life throws at us at the same time. Taking a break and smoking .. that is not okay..that is not quitting. But going crazy and then screaming.. NO.. HOW STUPID AM I ??? That is forgiveable. Please don't use this post as an excuse.. it is not.. You have to fall of the wagon.. not jump off (lol).. I agree with you.. quitting means being serious.. and you might fool us.. but, you can't fool yourself. Congrats on 33 days.. stay strong.. When i joined this site, originally, I inspired by the numbers on each ones' meters, be in in 2,000 or just 2! Back then even one day was a monumental task! The power to control the demon is ongoing and sometimes we might faulter. I now believe that the purpose of my meter is something I own, just like my quit and unless someone can get inside my skin, it can never represent to them what it means to me. Let each of us own the right to let the meter be a positive influence on ourselves. If we weakened a bit and got right back up and kept going...........personally, this is a stronger and better person for having admitted, I slipped, but, I am not going to let it me more than that! We are all human and given to mistakes but, let us each understand that it is ok, but, for the grace of God , it could have been me. Now, go brush your teeth and go to bed! Cheers, Pat

Rob47, True...........none of really " know " each other but, we are a mixed bag of people with one common problem and goal. It is great to have opposing views............without individuality , life would be very dull. Let us learn from each other and our diverse perspectives.............we have little to lose and lots to gain! I was neither disagreeing nor agreeing.........only giving my take on a particular subject. Sometimes, I think how blissful life was before I took on this challenge! What was I thinking??? Thinking that it is worth all of this present upheavel to spend more time here with the people I love, in good health. And that is what I wish U, Rob47 and all..........Good Health..........and to All A Good Night! LOL U Gotta Laugh! A slip, a drag, a bad day, emotions, it's all the same you smoke even one drag it's going off your program. You can call it what you want, you can justify it all you want. Bottom line be true to thy own self or lie to thy own self. I used to think that if someone slipped they should set back their meter. I know I would if I did. Now I really don't think about what anybody else does on this matter. Their quit is not my quit. I have to only worry about myself (which believe me is a full time job) and support other people if they need it. Everyone should do whatever feels right for them. If setting it back motivates them more then that is what they should do. If they don't want to set it back because it makes them feel like too much of failure and that keeps them from quitting again then they should just leave it alone. I am sure the people who don't set it back and then quit again always have the real number in their heads anyway. The important thing is that they eventually quit for good. Some people but a lot of stock in the meter some don't. I like it because it kind of inspires me. If I have a bad day, and then I see my numbers I say to myself there is no way I am going to throw all those days away. But that is just me. To each his or her own. I am done now. My book will be in the stores in April.
