Friends smoking in front of me

RissaRoo: I had the same problem when I quit as most of my close friends smoke. I did however ask them to be considerate of the fact that I had quit and they did. I did not go anywhere that triggered my cravings which was a bar etc... I even gave up a girls weekend to avoid a slip. My suggestion would be to stay away from any situation that might question your quit until you are further along. Giving up a few good times now will be worth it later. Rissa, Everyone is different. For me, I was fine immediately. I still went out on my smoke breaks with my co-worker... just didn't smoke. When I was having a bad day or a really bad craving, I didn't go when she came to get me, but most of the time, I went. So for me, it wasn't an issue, but for some, it might take longer. What I did was smoked my licorice... I used the twizzler "pull and peel" licorice, cut (bit) it to the length of a cigarette and "smoked" that... it has the same resistance to a drag of a cigarette and worked for me. Some use straws, but licorice tasts better! :) Best wishes to you! Crave the Quit! Do whatever you must to maintain your quit....it's harder in the beginning....it will get easier.....you will finally be able to be around smokers and not think about smoking.....at least it worked that way for me(and believe me, I was a died in the wool, panic without my cigs, smoker) I now sometimes 'choose' to avoid my smoking friends, cause although it doesn't make me crave, the stink of my coats, clothes, hair, etc, after being with them, is really replusive......so much so, that I often forego their company. The problem will work itself out as you become more comfortable with your decision to quit.....just give it time. Rissa, Thank you for sharing. If these are your friends for life, then they will absolutely understand your need to stay away for a while. Avoiding the situation, is one of the many tools the program suggests. Avoid the smoking situations for a while until you are stronger. Spend some alone time, or time with the hubby. When you are stronger, you can give it a try and know you can succeed being around the temptation. You can also try to do things that do not include smoking. Such as going to the movies, or perhaps bowling, are there any non smoking restaurants? If they have to go outside to smoke your temptation will be less and you can distract yourself in other ways. Hope this helps, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
