Hi Siren! First of all, thumbs up! you're already doing great by having made the decision and sticking to it. I know a bit about bipolar illness, and i might seem like a bigger challenge for you to stop smoking but it's not. Your body is addicted to nicotine like any other smoker. Be strong, keep strong and you'll get there one day at a time like everyone of us! Best of luck to you Siren! ;)

Hi everyone!! I was just wondering if anyone here is bipolar and is successfully quitting? I'm bipolar and have been scared to death to quit for quite some time now. I read that 70% of people who are bipolar are smokers and that it's harder to quit when you have a mental illness. Stupid mental illness!! Can anyone relate to this? Hey again Siren ! I answered your great post about writing a letter to announce that you were quitting. I do know some about bi-polar persons and smoking. Your number about a lot of bi-polars smoking is true. Mental illness is often accompanied by an addictive personality. I know you want to know the truth about this because you will need all the help you can get to get free of this addiction. It will be somewhat harder for you to quit than for someone who is not mentally ill. It doesn't mean you cannot quit !! NO NO !!!! You can quit ! We will help you mthrough it and be understanding too. My sister is schizophreic and her daughter is bi-polar. My oldest daughter is bi-polar. They all smoke or smoked. My sister who has been a 2 pack a day + smoker wants to quit too. She is 49 years old and has emphysema in one lung. She is working with her doctor to get some kind of meds to help her through the quit. My daughter is almost 30 and is still running from getting herself stabilized so, smoking is still part of her life. My niece who is almost 29, quit smoking when she got pregnant with her first child and never smoked again. She now has children. It can be done for sure. You might want to talk to your doctor and see if he/she has suggestions to help you be successful. He/she will be glad to know you are quitting. You probably see a counselor.. and that is some of the best support ever. I would go to a counselor if I had the money. I am really pulling for you Siren !!! You sound so strong and ready to get rid of this stupid addiction. Hang Tuff !! Siren, I'm so glad that you didn't smoke them. Get rid of the cigarettes immediately !!! When I quit I got rid of everything about cigarettes.. ashtrays.. lighers, everything. Get some candy like red hots or lemonheads or tootsie roll pops. When you get a craving.. grab some candy.. get hooked on the candy while you quit smoking..( you can always quit the candy later.. lol) Don't forget to smell your hair and your nice smokefree hands.. they both smell good now... natural. Good going girl ! Hang Tuff.. Hey, i'm bipolar, and i quit smoking a while back. i have heard that the withdrawal symptoms are different for people who are bipolar or depressive, but my quit went as smoothly as possible. some people apparently get depressive symptoms when trying to quit, in the first week or so. but, you can do it, i'm sure you can. if i did it, you definitely can also. good luck w/ the quit. viga My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/1/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 527 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,746 Amount Saved: $1976.25 Life Gained: Days: 37 Hrs: 12 Mins: 59 Seconds: 8
