Anti-Smoking Ordinances...What's your opinion?

18 years ago 0 189 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hmmm.....although I would love to see everyone quit smoking (especially my mother), I do not think it is right to force them to face and conquer their addiction before they are ready to do so. Most of us here at the SSC have at one time or another said that a person has to quit for themselves, and has to want to quit more than they want to smoke. If I were at a job for 5, 10, 15 years, and then one day they said "either quit smoking or find a new job", I don't know what I would do. I have to go out now, but this is definately an interesting topic... I still think the government should outlaw smoking. That's sure would make me think twice about relapsing, lol. Also,,,nicotine is a drug just like alcohol, heroine, cocaine, marajuana, etc... It's just that it's legal that makes it such a sneaky drug. Alcohol's legal too but dui's bring out the drug addicts very easily. Many company's are required to or choose to give drug tests to their employees. At least they're not testing for nicotine, lol or we'd have even a higher unemployment rate. I say the addict needs to deal with the rules and regulations of where they work. They should be happy they had it so easy and just deal with the reality of their choice to smoke. A delivery company wouldn't want alcoholic's to drive for them. A hospital doesn't need to have smokers hanging around the sick patients. I went to the VA in Denver today and while waiting in 2 seperate waiting rooms had to smell a few guys that totally reeked/reaked whatever of cig's. It was sooooo bad! Can u imagine being a patient and your nurse walks in stinking of cig's. yuk! But then the junkie part of me say's I hope they don't outlaw smoking cuz it's so easy to use to escape just incase I ever start again. Also the junkie in me says,,,those poor people at the hospital can't even enjoy they're breaks and too bad for the people visiting there relatives and loved ones, stressing out and needing a cig. I can certaintly relate. I'm just glad I quit & I don't stink anymore :) No matter what don't lite up... Keep on keepin on... Up bringing,+, Education,+ Circumstances = John Doe...son of Mr. Father and Mrs.Mother smokers Smokes are sold everywhere, Advertisment for smokimg is everywhere, smoking is allowed everywhere... THEN:..... NO ADVERTISMENT FOR SMOKING ....NO SMOKING ALLOWED SIGHS BUT...Cigarettes are still sold everywhere No hope for Mr. Father and Mr Mother Smokers...They are already way past there prime in life to even understand the concept of nicotine addiction, because there was no Education freely availible to them. John Doe... Smokes...he now hears on TV that smoking might be bad for him. He grew up with smoking, and went through school with NO education on nicotine addiction. He is a heavy smoker of 35yrs now...and has a son who smokes. TV expanded to books about the dangers of smoke to the age of computers. John Doe...is now hearing of all the effects of cigarettes. But John Doe has a addiction to nicotine. All of his life smoker was a way to relax. No more smoking in all his favorite places. He had to adjust his whole life style to the way of the world. Well he just stayed home...because that was the only free space he could relax and smoke. His son grew up with the signs of NO SMOKING. He avoided places where there was no smoking. He is educated through school on the fact smoking is harmfull to your health. He now realizes for the first time cigaretts are a danger to your health. He is already addicted to cigaretts at this time. He gets married and has a son. He smokes, his wife smokes...there son is living in a fog of smoke. There son grows up and learns of all the dangers of smoking, and more important the addiction. The year is 2006...the boy does not smoke. The boy never smoked. Yet smoking was the biggest inpact of his life. He lost his Great Grandad to smoking, his Grandma to smoking, and his Mother to smoking. His Dad, well he is alive, lying there with that oxgen tank. Cigaretts are still for sale, in a store near you. Let me state my position again. In fact, let me quote myself:
The hospital has the right to do whatever it wants on its property.
Doctors who smoke will continue to smoke in their plush doctors' lounges. No one is going to fire a doctor, believe me. Any nurse will tell you that. All this does is punish the people who are paying the hospital's exorbitant rates. Rusty

Well, Sharon, this is sure to be a lively discussion. The hospital has the right to do whatever it wants on its property. But I feel sorry for the people who spend long days and nights with their sick loved ones and not being able to go outside for a smoke. The days I spent at the hospital when my mother was in intensive care would have been even more brutal if I had not been able to get outside for a smoke. And to not be able to smoke on the way to your car? Please. Let's not be Nicotine Nazis. UFO, excellent job of adding context to the discussion. It has always angered me that there are very few attempts to provide opportunities for nicotine addiction treatment. I work for a state government and have health insurance through one of the largest providers in the country. And yet, there are no smoking cessation support mechanisms or information, and the insurance does not cover NRTs. Punishing the addict seems to be the preferred method of treatment. Rusty

Descrimination against the smoker, no doubt about it and completely unfair in my view. Penitent d606

Private interprise should be able to hire whoever they like. My husband works as an adjuster for a company who will fire an employee if they see him smoking.....now they don't care if you smoke at home or unseen....but if "management" sees you smoking, you are done. This guy owns the company....so shouldn't he be able to do as he pleases?? So I guess he has the right to make the rules?? The answer to this question is a fine line between the rights of each party. If government didn't gain revenue from the tobacco industry, smoking would probably be against the law. and then have you ever considered what the whole nation quitting would do to the economy? people living longer....more social security payments....more employment needed....more aged care facilities. what about all the jobs related to the tobacco industry? what about all the state taxes collected on tobacco?? We tend to forget and think only the big tobacco company is the one benefiting from the making of smoking products. not so. and is overeating next on the list.....it's a health hazard to the "doer" also?? If caught eating french fries you loose your job? Haven't there already been suggestions about lawsuits against fast food joints for contributing to health damages?? How far could this thing go??? As adamant as some people can be, it could go a LONG way if turned loose. now don't tar and feather me....I wish there were no such THING as smoking.....but it's been going on forever. gonna be hard to turn that all around. and somehow as badly as I now hate smoking, I can well remember how I felt about all this when I did smoke. It really WAS my right to smoke in my own space....after all, it's legal...??? my assesment is...however this plays out, one side is gonna be upset! don't let it all drive ya to smoke LOL Katy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/4/2002 Smoke-Free Days: 1474 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 58,987 Amount Saved: $8107 Life Gained: Days: 192 Hrs: 8 Mins: 24 Seconds: 48
