A Genuine Concern

I have been here since October of 2005 - In my opinion, I think the milestone groups are great. I have not made it to one it, but it gives me something to look forward to. In 25 days I will be on the cruise and having a good time. I have popped in on different groups and was never chased away. But I do think it is awesome that you are looking out for the newbies. I am still a newbie in my quit, but I am past being a newbie at this site. SSC is much more than a Stop Smoking Center. I am proud to be a member Cuddles It's better to be a non-smoker with an occasional desire for a cig than a smoker with a constant desire to quit...... Penitent. It is important that all quitters support each other in this quit process. Every quitter here has something to offer along this journey. I know that for me my influence has not only included those ahead of me but also those traveling with me and those traveling behind. The new quitters remind me of where I once resided. That makes me more determined not to go back there. In my opinion the quit family at the SSC is an exclusive group of quitters in itself. This is an awesome support group in every aspect of the quit. I would hate to think that anyone felt uncomfortable here but also realize there is no way to please everyone. I can see your concern; however, aside from the beach, the original milestone, there is little activity in the other threads such as the 6-12 club and the VIP club. I believe the VIP club gives some of the older quitters a place to go and unite after being away for a while. Personally, the beach was a huge milestone for me and I was very proud to finally make it there. I arrived with my new digital camera, suntan lotion, and joined friends that I had met along the way for a grand celebration. That virtual beach is one of the things that kept me going during the first 100 days. It was a milestone that I could visualize and it was important. At that stage of my quit I needed an obtainable goal in order to feel successful. The beach provided that for me and I believe has done the same for many others. As always, this is just my opinion. Take what you want and leave the rest. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 7/1/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 320 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,407 Amount Saved: $1120 Life Gained: Days: 28 Hrs: 5 Mins: 32 Seconds: 12

First of all, Mr. Ed, if you look at the "d729" at the bottom of Pen's post, that stands for the number of days he's been quit. He's not as pronounced as some of us with his quit meter. ;p Second, Pen, I understand where you are coming from. I have definitely felt that way before, but also realize that the general consensus on this site is that these "clubs" help members feel like they have something to work towards. Although, you do run the risk of alienating people, but there's ALWAYS a risk of that. The simple, steadfast truth is that if somebody posts that they need help or that they're struggling, or even that they're new and are just introducing themselves, the members of this site WILL respond, whether they are old as dirt (quit speaking, of course :p ) or they're newbies just starting. This site gives some of the best support I've ever seen in a support group. Yes of course, there are clicks... show me one group, virtual or otherwise, that doesn't have clicks in it and I'll be amazed. The difference I see in THIS group is that everybody supports everybody. However, I do totally understand where you are coming from and have felt alienated from them myself, so I do agree with you to a certain extent, but I really would like to think that anybody who comes to this site is welcomed with open arms and is not denied by anybody. I certainly have never specifically shut somebody out and I don't think anybody else does either. Just my opinions. Crave the Quit! Joonie - if I may speak for Cuddles, what she meant was just popping in on a "thread" to post or read - just like you are doing right here, right now. If you go to the avoiding relapse forum, you will notice the cruise ship heading for the beach (50-100 days), the Beach (100+ days), the 6-12 club (6-12 months) and the ViP club (over a year). They are not secret special chat places, just a thread like this one. Usually the content is welcoming people to their new milestones. Feel free to go to any one of these sites any time - though you will find that most of the helpful information is right here on this forum. Hope this helps clarify. I appreciate your concern, but I think all is well with the SSC. These clubs represent virtual milestones. I believe that they serve to provide motivation, and also a place to say hi to others who are in the same part of their process. Also sometimes, some comic relief from this battle. If I had observed, that once people met their milestones, that they went and hung out in their clubs with like-minded same-stat quitters, then I too would be concerned. However, what I have noticed is that these same people who have made it to "the beach" or the "cruise ship" or the 6-12 club, are the same people who are flitting all over the site, giving support and encouragment where needed to quitters in ALL stages. They are like stepping stones - grade school, middle school, high school, college, grad school. Noone is better than anyone else, only at different stages in the journey. As long as we still remember that we are ALL addicts and that we are ALL in the same family, I think all is well. By the way, congratulations on two years!!!!!!!!!!!!! I enjoyed figuring out what all the groups meant. I also relate the groups to milestones in a project. That's all they really are. Any work in progress has points of completion that should be recognized or noted in some way. That's all these groups are. I have no issue. Pen, I somewhat agree with you. I think there is a definite danger in making some folks feel like they don't "belong". When I first joined this site in December 2004, it seemed to me like everyone already knew each other. I quickly found my entryway, but not everyone is as pushy as I am. I belong to a couple of other forums, and I also experience that feeling that folks are speaking directly to one another and I'm an outsider. On the other hand, some of these groups have done an excellent job in taking care of each other and building a buddy system. I think your post is a good reminder to all of us that we need to remember that our task is to keep our quits and help others make and keep theirs. I must admit that I've had the same thoughts. I quit three months after Pen and most of those that were veterans at that time have faded away. The monthly quitter names and "clubs" weren't around then to my knowledge. Honestly, I think it might scare away some of the older quitters too because I know I felt like I had no idea what was going on here anymore. I do understand the point of all of them but it seems like those who have been around for a while are immune to just how many group names there are and how they appear. And although the caveat of "but feel free to post anywhere" is always there - it does't always seem that way. Whatever works I suppose. Just don't smoke - yuck!
