waywardwind, Congratulations on 11 smokefree days. Keep up the great work. Remember one day at a time. That is how we succeed. Take Care and Enjoy this journey, Melanie _____________________ The SSC Support Team

Congrats on 11 days! and thanks for the much needed advice. I had an aweful second day. I hope it does get better after the first three days. Speaking of our quit meters.. mine isn't saying how many cigs I haven't smoked.. I love that number and now it appears to be lost. When I stop and restart the program, I get an error that says "failed to register hotkey". Have any of you seend this before?

Hey Wayward. Go set your meter back 2 days.. forget about the logic.. just subtract 2 !!! That would erk me too !! It is a week today that I quit and today is the day that I announce to my extended family that I quit. I didn't want to jump the gun until I was really really sure. You are right.. the time is starting to pick up and days are just adding up. Okay.. not forever, you are right.. I am going to have a cigarette in 3 years on July 4th of 2009. Okay that pressure is off.. lol You sound smart and realistic.. you're gonna make it !!! Hang Tuff !! Good for you, I'm on day 9 and had a pretty bad morning. I went for a walk to clear my head and I feel much better now. It's very cold here in Ottawa so it had to be a short walk. Keep it up. We can do this. Now on day 11 (even though my quit meter says it's just 9 days! I guess it doesn't take into account the time difference for here in Australia. Makes me a bit cross that it is underestimating my quit time though - I value every minute that I distance myself from my last cigarette!) It's felt important to me on this quit attempt, to just put one foot in front of the other, just to make it through to the next goal. By setting smaller goals for myself, I was able to not bring myself unstuck with counterproductive self-talk like "What, you mean I can never have another cigarette again?", or "Forever? That's too hard!". I hope some of you know what I mean. My initial goal was just to make it through those horror first three days, after that a week, last night was 10 days, and I can see two weeks clearly in sight! I know so much more about myself on this attempt - I know the voices of my addiction and feel much more able to listen but not respond to it's perverse logic, and it's demands and protests! I've enjoyed the site and feel good to be amongst a community of people who know just how much of a struggle it can be. I hope I can lean on the support group as I need to... 31 years of behaviour can take a while to undo! In the meantime, I'm feeling good, and I'm feeling proud! I just wanna thank everyone who wrote responses to my post, and thank everyone who just read them as well! It is great to be able to make these kind of public declarations, and know that you're being heard and understood. It feels like years since my first post. I'm now on day 17, and I would like to say it's been easy, but it hasn't, well, not today anyway. I'm not complaining mind you - if anyone had told me 17 days ago, that I'd be where I am now, I'm not sure I would have believed them! But I've had to spend a couple of hours on the site today, just to kind of keep myself in check, not really sure why, just general edginess I guess. Inbetween, I've taken the dog for an hour long walk, and been for a long swim at the local pool. A lot of extra energy to expend I guess! I've adopted the N.O.P.E strategy into my coping skills too. Although I wrote in my first post of just putting one foot in front of the other, of just dealing with say five minutes at a time, I found that the N.O.P.E. strategy really helps when I'm out with other smokers. I just remember Not One Puff, Ever! Even if I've had a couple of drinks, I am able to summon the expression to help me keep my distance, and to think through consequences! It really works! My intention is to win with this quit. I am doing this for myself, and for no-one else. You listening to me, three weeks? Cause you're not far off, and I've got you in my sights! Waywardwind, I know exactly what you mean about the thoughts of "this is forever, can I do this forever?" - those thoughts caused severe cravings the first two days. I wasn't very good at just doing one hour or minute at a time, either. But I just convinced myself to hold on, and have faith that the urges would diminish, and things would get better. I am into day 10 today!! Like you said, the two week mark is just ahead! WOHOO!! We have alot to be proud of!!! :8|: My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/29/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 9 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 141 Amount Saved: $36 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 0 Mins: 35 Seconds: 21

Thinking "forever" STILL causes an uncomfortable physical response for me. Congrats on the formation of new coping skills!
