Hi Joe, 41 days ago it seemed like I was at the point where I was just living from one cigarette to the next! As soon as I put one out I started craving another one! I didn't really quit for myself - somebody else talked me into setting a quit date and I really dreaded it. As it turned out, she didn't quit (yet) but I started really thinking about what smoking was doing to me and what the future would bring if I didn't quit, and here I am! It hasn't been easy, but I am so proud of myself and starting to feel so much better and so much freer! Believe it or not (I can't!)sometimes hours will pass by without a craving! I think once I made the firm decision not to smoke it became much easier. No more struggling with "Can't I have just one?" stuff. If I can make it to day 40, anyone can! My moneys on you! Lynda :p

Hi Joe: I jsut read your entry from 2/10/06. Your story is so refective of mind it's scary. It was almost like reading a biography. I have to be a total non-smoker before March 8th, that's when I see a Vascular Surgeon about my clogged arteries. They have started a 'February' quiters group, you should check it out as there are a lot of us who have quit is February and are going through simular stages together. The gals and guys there are great! Hang tight! Tom

Thanks everyone. You have inspired me to move my quit date up to tomorrow.I really want to quit. My breathing is terrible, I just do not feel well. I'm sick of it. I have felt this way for some time and tried many times to quit but it seems the withdrawls would get me so down, so depressed, I'd just throw in the towel. I've just completed the first steps of this program and realized I already have a jump on things because about 2 weeks ago I purchased a Nicorette inhaler and started tracking my smoking. I mainly tried "putting off" by watching the clock ,using the inhaler when I got the urge to smoke, and recording the length of time between cigs. By this method I got down to 7 from 16-18 daily. However, I must tell y'all that you people on this forum are giving me more confidence than I ever had before. Just an amusing footnote to golferman;my screen name is read "joe stuff" (not tuff). I must say, you folks talk good. I can feel some hope. I have not set a quit date yet as I have a couple of very stressful days ahead but I am working up to it. I know a little about addictions because I once had a severe drinking problem but with the help of a 12 step group I have not had a drink in over 18 years and I did stay off nicotin for 2 years. So, on the one hand, I believe I have an "addictive personality" (if there is such a thing) but on the other hand, I know I am capable of overcoming these addictions. I am getting inspiration just reading through the forum so feel this will be a great help. Thanks y'all. :)

I am new to the forum and must say I have little hope. Over the years I have tried the following to quit smoking; gum, mouthwash, laser, acupuncture, Zyban (to name a few). My latest try is the Nicorette Inhaler but all I've managed is to cut down to 7 cigs a day from 16-18. The cravings are murder! Two other things that may be against me are the fact I am retired and during the winter I have a lot of time on my hands and also I live alone and cigs are my companion. I just love to kick back in my lazyboy with a coffee and smoke. On the good side I did quit smoking for over 2 years once. That was 25 years ago when I landed in hospital for 10 days where I couldn't smoke and so by the time I was released hosp. there was almost no craving. I started again when I came up against a very stressful time. I need a lot of help. Please.

Hi Joe, how is it going? glad to hear that you have set today as your quit day. We have all been in the same boat, I have been smoking for 35 years and it takes some willpower to quit and even more to stay quit. What I have found is helping me at the moment is to focus on the good things that happen when you quit. So although I am craving a lot of the time, I am relishing in the fact that I smell ok, I am not wheezing, my teeth and mouth feel clean. I have more time on my hands and I have a list of all the jobs I have been putting off doing, I also put the money I have saved in a tin and am planning what to spend it on etc etc. We are starting a group for those of us who started our quit this month, join us and we will all help each other particularly when time gets tough. You are in the right place Joe. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/6/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 6 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 76 Amount Saved: 15 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 3 Mins: 46 Seconds: 29

Hey Joestuff !! You sound as if you are older and wiser now. (Me too by the way). You are in good company ! Many of us have been in your shoes and scared to start. Scared that you will fail. You know, I felt the same way before I quit. But, I was wrong.. it hasn't been the end of the world. It has been the start of a new healthier .. cleaner, cheaper .. on and on.. way of life. You have come to the right place Joe. Start here.. come often.. complain, vent, on a good day, on a bad day, on any day.. you will always find someone here who understands and will help you through. You sound like you will become someone who ends up helping others. You completed that 12 step program.. you can do this.. Get ready.. make some plans, get some quitting snacks, reward yourself with the money you will save... see you see. Congratulations on deciding to quit. A person is much better off when they decide to quit, then if it goes so far that they HAVE to quit. I HAD to quit, and even though I HAD to quit I still tried to makeup excuses. I am 11 days quit and it's still a problem mostly in the morning and in the evening when I'm alone so I know what you are going through.

Hi Joe, I know exactly where you're coming from with the breathing problem. That was the final straw for me and the day I smoked my last cigarette. I ended up in the ER because I couldn't breathe. I, like you also, used the gum and the Nicotrol inhaler. It worked enough for me to cut down to 5 cigs a day. But what finally did it for me was the cold laser therapy. Plus I guess the "will" to do it was finally enough. My whole family has had bronchial/lung problems, being on oxygen and losing family members to cancer. All that still wasn't enough, I guess. I was a real slave to those cigs. Big time. I'm doing it one day at a time now. I think thats about the only way you can do it, at least for me. And not even one DAY at a time, one hour is more like it. So good luck, you CAN do it!!!! If I can, anyone can!!
