Hitting Rock Bottom

This is a good topic! I've hated my smoking for several years, have fought with myself about quitting. It was when the eye doctor told me I had macular degeneration, at age 50, beginning in my eyes that I woke up. He told me if I didn't want to be blind someday, I needed to stop smoking. Not smoking won't cure it, but it will keep it from progressing nearly as fast. I'm not so worried about it, as there are things to do to help prevent it. It was all I needed to piss me off past the point of no return! I smoked for about another week after that. Golferman' Rock Bottom for me was 1982 when I realized I had a choice to make: Milk for my children, or smokes for me! I quit cold turkey...10 years. I didn't relapse for me...it was for someone else who wanted me to lose weight and "he didn't have time to wait on my natural methods of reduction (exercise and reduction of calories). We do make bad choices in our lives and smoking is a biggie. He was a loser and I got rid of him before a year passed into the relationship, however...I didn't lose the smoking. I kept promising myself I was going to quit and after 15 years, I am now following through with my promise to myself. I remember my anger when I quit the first time and the hatred toward the nicodemon. I don't have the hatred...that is past...now it is simple logic. Smoking is not a safe habit to have and it gets more costly every year. I simply want better things in my life than SMOKE Sweet smelling Hair,Skin, breath, clothing and clearer skin and when I hug my Grandchildren...they won't turn their little heads away in disgust from the smell!!! thanks for letting me share...auntdeb :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 10 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 492 Amount Saved: $48.7 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 10 Mins: 39 Seconds: 4

Joe and Interesting, You are absolutely right. I think we need that wake up call. The one that tells us what we should be doing, and we don't fight it every step of the way. I think we've all had quits where we do just that - quit - but we really don't ACCEPT the fact. Its not until we truly accept it and honestly make changes in our lives that we will be successful. A wake up call keeps it all real. Smoking is not glamorous, it kills. Food for thought. Emotionally, yes, I think I've hit rock bottom. I lost my mother to cancer a year ago this month...wake up call? Oh yeah. My mother smoked all her life and although it wasn't lung cancer that claimed her, they say it was related to smoking. Its taken me a year, and many attempts to get this far. Meaning I finally gave in and stopped being too proud to use extra help. I am attempting my quit on Jan. 13 - NO - I AM quitting on Jan. 13. As a smoker I'm laden with guilt. I don't like myself very much for doing it, and feeling this way isn't much fun at all. Maybe I should have kicked myself in the ass last January, but I used smoking as crutch to get over the death of my mother. I was very close to her. So I am here, at this point, with help of Zyban and perhaps the patch, thinking of the hell my mother went through. A year later and a little stronger, I will be the non smoker I've always wanted to be. Jan, Everyone who quits has that "wake up call" moment. It just took a while for you. Hell, I attended a funeral for a friend who died from lung cancer, got to my car, and lit one up. That was a couple of years before my quit. Smokers are simply in denial. Until that moment is reached, if ever for some, a person will not quit. That is the sad reality of this addiction. I have a friend who quit with the help of Zyban and the patch. Whatever works, go for it. Be sure and let us know how the quit is going. Best wishes. Be Strong. Be Smart. Cigarettes Not Smoked

18 years ago 0 23 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I did not hit rock bottom. In some ways, my quit came to me rather than the other way 'round. Over time my awareness of the daily costs and cumulative effects of smoking changed. I came to resent what smoking was doing to me and my life. I know the physical addiction model applies to nicotine and offer no argument about that. I am not so sure about all the "addicition treatment models" because I am not convinced "treament" is the way to think about ending addiction. Ending addiction means surviving withdrawal. Yep, that's exactly it. When I first "tried" to quit, I was hating myself for the depths I would sink to, trying to hide that I was sneaking a smoke. I had to try and fail in order to succeed. I know you wanted to hear fm the newer folks but I couldn't help myself. As usual, Joe, you hit a nerve and my knee-jerk response is above. (Cold Turkeys are a little nerve-y.)
