Failed 1st day

Josie, you're absolutely right. I have to concentrate on my health, and the quitting will make me better. I feel as if I'm just now recovering my sanity from all the stress I've encountered in the last 3-4 years of my life. My husband (now 41..still smoking, and have worried myself sick over that) had a stroke, and 2 years later, he had open heart surgery(last January). I put so much into helping him that I put my own well being on the back burner. Last August I was put into the local E.R. for DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis...doc was afraid I'd go into a diabetic coma). My mind felt like it was put through a blender and pasted back together with spit. I've only recently recognized that I've been so stressed out/frantic about his and my health issues, that I've been running into things instead of taking it slowly, and not sorting things out properly. I've felt all over the place. But, in the last little bit of time, I've come to realize that all can't be done RIGHT NOW! It takes time to recover and I need a mental slow down to tackle each thing, seperately. Thanks so much for words. Harley

Thanks oinkoink2u. The failure made me just want to throw a little pity party for myself, but I did realize, after a while, that I can give it another go, and not quit quitting. And, I realize that I do need y'all for some needed strength. I'm prepared to be positive, because quitting will only produce positive results. No need to be negative about that, though I know those things that are worth having aren't always gained with ease, I will overcome any and all suffering!! Thank you so much for letting me lean on ya! HOLD FAST!! Harley

Janet, my hands are now on my hips, looking straight ahead, and am out of the dirt and headed for that rock o'er yon! ;) I've not gone to the ADA message board, but have been to other diabetic related ones. I'll give it a go! And, I will continue to come back to this board, as often as possible, because the encouragement/support is much needed from you lot. I do tend to be more positive about the whole thing when I come back here to at least read. Sorry to hear that you have that dreaded disease, but am glad to know you're on the right road to better health. Thank you, as well, for the needed support. Good health to you and yours. LOL! bogbott (jan)...no, not my best shoes. I do imagine it would be tough going in 30 days or so and then slipping. Reckon better the first day than the 30th! My husband just called and asked me if I was kickin' myself in the a**. I said, "No. Won't do a bit of good, and I'm gettin' a little help from my new found, non-smoking friends." I hope your hubby has done as well as you. Best to the both of ya. Harley

Thanks for the reminder, Janet...truly, it will pass. And, as time marches on, as time does, I will be able to be supportive to others, as well... becoming a wise elder in the habit kickers society! **big toothy smile** I can't seem to leave the board just yet, and I'm at work. But, it's pretty laid back, today. Grateful for that, as I do have a bit more time to be here and get a bit more prepared for tomorrow, with all the encouragement and what. You're a great bunch of people, here... just GREAT! Harley

redrosie, thanks for your understanding, and for being there for me. I CAN do this, I WILL do this, and soon I will be one of you...those who have kicked or are in process of kicking that nicodemon in the a**! And Lady, I really do need to realize the "junkie" thinking. MERCY!, the things that I'm addicted to is mind bogglin'! I don't like the thought of being an addict....well, only addicted to living life more healthy. Thanks to you both for the support and suggestions. Now, to apply it!! Harley

I caved. **hands in pocket..looking down...kicks dirt** There is no excuse for it, and I've been ashamed to come back here and tell you fine people. The thing is, I think I'm giving up too many things in such a short period of time. I feel almost frantic about getting my health back. See, I was diagnosed with diabetes only about 6 months ago. It was a total shock, but a loud wake-up call. I was on insulin injections and meds...now, I've taken myself off, reason being, it forces me to eat a more balanced diet and exercise(not relying on insulin shots and meds to keep me "healthier") in order to better control the disease (refusing to live my life taking meds and insulin which causes more damage over time). Anyhoo..the only sugar I get is a spot in my tea (which I'm not suppose to drink because of caffeine, so I've given up the majority of sugar in my life. Trying to wean myself off caffeine (tea), which to my understanding I was given as a baby in a bottle to wean me off milk...and I've drank it almost everyday since (I'm 38 years old, now). I'm not supposed to get "full" off any meal that I eat, and those meals are suppose to be spread out over 5-6 times daily (snacks, basically, just feeling "satisfied"). Can't have diet colas because of the neurotoxin Aspartame, which interferes with insulin activity. Can't have too much fat, too many carbs or too much protien. Can't have refined white flour products...bread, baked goods, pasta, etc.. because of the poison "alloxan" (makes flour white..refining/bleaching process) which kills pancreatic beta cells, and milk is questionable. !!! I'm a secretary at a grocery distributing warehouse. The "smoking" break-room is next door to my office, and I and other's are allowed to smoke in my office. I caved just 4 hours into my quit. I can't lean on food, because I want all the wrong things which will increase my blood glucose and insulin levels. AND, the vending machines are right next door to the break-room, with all those goodies I'm not allowed to have!!@$#%*!@?? I'm not over weight, actually I'm at the correct weight for my age and height (that's great for any diabetic), and I have to keep that up. The food/sugar and nicotine cravings got the best of me, and I gave in to the nicotene craving.

Hi Harley, first of all can I just say congrats on coming back and not giving up giving up. I know exectly how you feel having to give up too many things at once, I have to as well but not the same issues as you. In my experience you have to focus on one issue at a time otherwise life is that intolerable that you end up failing. My worst time for smoking was at a weekend so I started my quit on a Monday so that I had 5 days under my belt by the time te weekend cme around again so I think that for you to start tomorrow is a good move. Good luck, if you need any help or encouragement, you know where to come. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/6/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 11 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 137 Amount Saved: 27.5 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 2 Mins: 6 Seconds: 10
