One of the fundamental threads of quitting.

Thank you Fear-less for reminding me that I am an addict and nothing is going to change that. I must come to terms with that first and formost if I want my quit to succeed. Your letter was so heart felt and real it made me really think what I was doing to my body and spirit. Thank you for the reminder of why I am on this journey. ~Valic My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/24/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 6 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 34 Amount Saved: $31.8 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 11 Mins: 47 Seconds: 0

Thank you Fear Less, I believe I benefited from your letter to self. The addict is already a firm part of who I am even though I have it under control now. The last thing I want is to let my guard down and leave my quit vulnerable to the type of mental shrapnel you described. The challenge to keep my quit now is mental and if I fail on this level the addict will take it from there. Congratulations to all who have the addict under control! I believe this is the most beneficial thing Ive done for myself and my family. Fear Less Your honesty is compelling and you express yourself with great dignity...Welcome back...I am sorry that you are making the trip twice, but I hear a strength in you that means business...Stay close...nonic My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 123 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,971 Amount Saved: $861 Life Gained: Days: 22 Hrs: 23 Mins: 59 Seconds: 32

Thanks Lady. Needed that. Had a conversation with a sibling smoker last night. We had a "journey" vs. "trip over" debate. The latter outlook believes that you can one day let your guard down while the former believes that you will always have to be on guard and protect your quit. I contended this journey theory, and feel I must always, because I am an addict, and there is no such thing as a former addict. Thank you Fear Less, your eloquent, simple, non-whiny letter to you has become a letter to me. It is going on my fridge.
