Dealing with stress..

18 years ago 0 75 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I used to think that having a cig when i was stressed helped me but now i think that was all in my head!! I think not smoking has made me stronger cause now i've learned to deal with situations and i think i actually handle stress better now. Does anyone else feel that way? i know many of you are having a difficult time with your quits and probably won't agree with this. Looking for feedback what do you all think? Yeah......my way of "coping" in an "intense" argument with my husband was to go out to the patio and light up. He rarely followed me to continue the fight, so I got peace and could sit out there for 10 minutes or so and cool off myself......(he's a non-smoker BTW) And that's just one example of where I turned to cigarettes instead of dealing with the problem/issue. It's still going to be a long road ahead. I'm not counting my chickens as far as having this thing beat. I have my "routine" triggers down pretty good, but I know there will be intense experiences come up in my life, and no matter how far into my quit I am, probably my first instinct will be to light up......it's HARD breaking a 22 year habit. But I've started......... ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/19/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 33 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 501 Amount Saved: $222.75 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 0 Mins: 25 Seconds: 5

BJ, I read somewhere....probably Allen Carr's book, that 20 minutes after one puts out a cigarette the withdrawal process begins. So, when you light up that next cig, you think you are reducing stress when in reality you are just feeding your addiction. So you see, smoking causes stress because if you don't light up, you become very uncomfortable and stressed. When I read that, for some reason it made me really mad.....being duped for decades into this vile habit. But the anger and the knowlege helped me quit because, as Lady said, "everyday I'm closer to never feeling that way again" (wanting to smoke). That was my mantra the first couple of months and got me thru ALOT of craves. BJ you are absolutely correct. Smoking causes stress it doesn't relieve it. The problem a lot of people have (including me) with quitting is not having the coping skills necessary to handle the stresses that come our way. Non-smokers seem to have developed these skills while we were out smoking and when we quit we have to develop them on our own. But it is doable. :) Keep up the good quit and remember that no matter what may come your way... there is no situation that smoking will make better. EVER! Hi, BJ. Interesting topic. One thing I've found is that not only do I deal with stress better, but there is less of it to deal with. Things that used to really stress me out don't anymore. I find myself more apt to just consider the source and ignore it than to get all bent out of shape over it. I think I had two sources of stress: general day-to-day stress and smoking-induced stress, and they were synergistic (total effect greater than the sum of the parts, i.e. 1 + 1 = 4). After removing the smoking stress (and adjusting to the loss of smoking), the remaining day-to-day stress is quite insignificant. Sort of like having to lug around a 100 pound weight for years, then it is suddenly reduced to 10. BJ.....you are 100% on the money. You can be a much calmer, rational person withOUT nicotine that you can with it!
