I need to calm down...help!

newbkr, Many people who quit will admit that the reason they never quit before was because of a fear of failure. Why go through withdrawal if it may not work, they wondered? They did not know about the Journey to our Online Quit Program or the wonderful support they could get here. When some people prepare to quit, they consciously try to cut down. One such person wrote to me that in order to be able to do that, she kept her cigarettes outside. For her, smoking had been automatic, and all other attempts to cut down had failed. She wanted to start developing coping methods before the big day came. Another person wrote that he put away his pack, only taking out a certain amount for the morning. He did the same for the afternoon and the same for the evening. This allowed him to discover the time of day when his strongest urges hit. Then he would work on dealing with that time of day. Cutting out a few favorites each day is another way to cut down, such as the ones on the ride home from work, or the first one in the morning. There are other ways of cutting down, and I hope the members will share how they did it. Stay strong, Melanie __________________ The SSC Support Team

Have faith in yourself. You are a non-smoker. It'll be a ride - ups and downs. Know this is the best thing you can do for yourself. Check in here often and look around. There are many who have plowed the path in front of us. Want it. Keep on keepin on. Good luck - you won't need it, though. fish

Newbkr, Hang in there. You can do this thing. No one is harder on us than ourselves when we fall. Trust me I know this from experience. Just jump right back up and brush it off. No one here will judge you so do not be afraid of us. If they do I will personally Kick their Ash. All we want is to see you keep trying and some day if you keep trying it will stick. I have to believe that after several failed attempts at this myself. If it weren't possible we wouldn't see people posting in here with 1477 Smoke Free days and 59,000+ cigs not smoked. Hang in there we are all behind you. If quitting were easy, there would be more non smokers. My dad (who is a smoker) can't believe that I'm still having cravings.....sometimes they drive me crazy, and I think "this is freakin' nuts, to be feeling like this after ALL THIS TIME" You are not a failure. You just haven't found the "key" previously. The key to keeping the quit is somewhere inside you. Only you know the reasons WHY you want to quit. Why don't you write them down here.......all of the reasons why you no longer think you should smoke (notice I didn't say "want" to smoke!) When your resolve is in writing, it does make a difference... Hi Newbkr.......mad tea-drinking (well not just at the moment, I've got a bedtime whisky at the moment) englishman here....
My self-esteem's taking a beating here.
Oh no it's not! You are going to do this! Remember I'll come over there and make you drink tea if you give me any grief! All you have to do is take deep breaths and not light a cigarette! OK! Newbker, you want to quit and leave this nasty, life-threatening habit behind. It's obvious, otherwise you would have disappeared from SSC long ago. You've been dealt some REALLY crappy cards in the past few months. If I had been in your shoes, I probably would have done the same thing without a doubt. But Duffis is right. Smokes aren't the cause of all the crap. They're just a crutch to lean on....and only the fantasy of a crutch at that. You've had the mother of all unwanted goodbyes to deal with...and made it through. Now kiss those cigs you don't even want anymore goodbye. We're all behind you! Newbkr- the diamond in the group above is Duffis' post. My addition is that you are a lovely lady, and you have had one hell of a year. The harder you are on yourself, the harder it will be to quit. To me, it is a miracle that you are here at this site. It would be so tempting to just pack it up and say, to heck with it all. But you have NOT done that, girl! We all love you and wish you to continue to work on becoming smoke free. All will be well, I know it!! :)
