Gotta do it

Here are my reasons to quit smoking: 1. Enjoy old age with my wife 2. Not get sick or become pathetic wreck or be a burden to my family due to smoking 3. Watch my children grow up and be around to enjoy my grandkids 4. Not isolate myself (I live in CA so this is a big problem for smokers) 5. Not smell like cigarettes 6. Improve my sense of smell and taste 7. Prove to myself that I can do it 8. Avoid having to feel like the biggest idiot on earth if I get lung cancer 9. Save the money 10.Improve my lung capacity So there you have it. Ten pretty good reasons. - DTQ My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/14/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 3 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 35 Amount Saved: $6 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 15 Mins: 57 Seconds: 6

Day 3, and not so bad as I expected. I bailed on my plan to forego chemical assistance and have been using a 14mg patch. This has been a big help in reducing the cravings. But I've done this before and smoked anyway; this time I'm actually finding myself able to exercise a bit of willpower and have not caved in yet. Thanks to all for your postings. The IM works fine on my home computer, but I rarely use that. It fails on my work machine, even after installing the .NET stuff per the instructions. But the forum is good by itself. -DTQ My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/14/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 2 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 27 Amount Saved: $4 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 11 Mins: 55 Seconds: 29

Determined, I'm sorry about the name thing, but I guess we share a certain outlook to this whole thing. Congrats on 10 days -- from what I read, you're halfway to the critical point for breaking a habit. DeterminedToQuit

You guys are all great and I thank you. Here is a question for the moderator: Is it kosher to publish your personal email address on this forum? Taking it one day at a time is a good idea.. thanks for reminding me. When you think about NEVER, it becomes much harder than just thinking about RIGHT NOW. -DeterminedToQuit My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/14/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 1 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 15 Amount Saved: $2 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 6 Mins: 36 Seconds: 50

OK, this forum is clearly the place. it's 4:30 pm my time, and virtually the close of day 1 for me since I never smoked at home anyway. Despite my disclaimer of 'no aids' I did use a patch today. Only one bad moment when I went for a walk and could have, oh so easily, detoured to the gas station to buy a pack and smoke 'just one.' But managed not to do it. So far so good, but I just hate the thought of it being forever -- that's what I've got to get used to. Thanks, all, for your encouraging words. Determined

I, too, have gone the detour route before and I know it does not work..it's 1 and then 2 and on to the same old habit...so i was pleased not to have done it today. But it's also depressing to think about facing that decision so many times ahead.

Does this website allow people to trade messages by email? since the email addresses are not shown, what is the best way to use this as a support network? Can I directly email other members? The IM software installs and works just fine on my home computer but fails on my computer at work (where I really need the support).

Hi, It's gone far enough. I've been totally beat by my inability to quit cigarettes and I refuse to let them run my life. I'm going cold turkey (no aids), but really need a support network with real ex-smokers who understand and want to help me to succeed. If you can email or chat during the workday (US - pacific time), I'd really welcome your help.

Determined- Good for you for not taking that detour! That is a very tough thing not to do. You probably already know this, but just one usually leads to many more! I've taken the detour MANY times in the past, but I'M DONE now! Congrats! You can do it!
