Need a Little Help/Advice

Quitordie, The fact that you are aware of the increase of alcohol consumption and are immediately concerned makes me think you will keep it in control. I noticed this past weekend that I drank a little more because I'd take a sip each time I'd notice someone else smoking (which is when I used to light up too). It's a coping mechanism right now...something to fill that void of the times we used to smoke. We JUST gave up the cigarettes, the extra drinking and eating are transitional things to help us get through it. I have noticed already that I have begun to get back to my normal eating habits. I imagine the drinking will catch up soon. Now, if that doesn't happen and a month or so from now we're still drinking considerably more than we used to, well...we'll work on that then. Have fun with your hubby and enjoy yourselves and the benefits of your quits! I am scared to death to drink just one drop and I do like to have a few beers especially friday night, or while I am doing housework, or on the computer, or having visitors. lol really I did like to drink every friday evening and during the summer...isnt that what summer is for? now I wont even allow myself to think about it and it saddens me to think about my beautiful trailer where you are with all your friends, eat, smoke and drink. Now I can eat and see my friends. hmmm, gunna have to give that some more thought. I think that if you are aware of what you are consuming which you obviously are, you will know when to stop or cut back. Between the two of you I have no doubt it will just happen. QOD, I am not sure that I am the one to talk about this as I haven't drank in almost 14 years (I'm Alcoholic). I would probably have to agree with HUmmy's suggestion about trying to set a limit and also with the fact that you can slow down the drinking later, but without doubt keep the quit. Drinking probably won't kill you as fast as smoking will unless you are behind the wheel of a car when you do it. Hang in there you are doin great. Give I QUit a hand with the Ash Kickers cause I can't be here much for the next week and a half and keep fighting the good fight. Cigarettes Not Smoked

My husband and I use to be heavy smokers and we liked to drink a little in the evenings and a little more on weekends. I've noticed that we are both drinking a lot more in the evenings than we use to, a whole lot more. There have been a couple of nights that I can't even remember going to bed and, by jesus, I know that is not the right way to live...I feel like I am giving up one habit for another and I don't want to go that route. I feel grateful (to a degree) that I can drinnk and not crave a cigarette because I think for a lot of people, drinking is a major trigger to smoke but, I certainly DO NOT want to become a drunk just to prevent dying from lung cancer

Hi Quitordie, good point and right to be concerned. I have not looked at it but the girls (sorry bots!) have posted details of the sister site re achohol problems. Maybe this is a good first port of call to establish if you have a genuine problem. Other than that........Hummybird's advice about a limit is a good idea....you could also spend the money that you were spending on cigarettes and drinking on something else. Why not go to the cinema or out for a meal instead. I know that smoking and achoholism can be dreadful, but my money on the most evil one is on nicodemon. Hope this helps. I know this won't be a popular message, but give yourself a break. So you are drinking more for the first little while who cares. If you notice that you NEED a drink after the first couple of weeks then re evaluate but I'm sure you are taking the edge off and haven't got used to drinking without smoking. for example, now you don't have those breaks to go outside for a smoke, looking for a pack or just putting the drink down to have a drag. I notice after the first time I quit, I would get drunk really quickly because I was drinking twice as fast. Keep an eye on that but just try to make it throught the next few days without the smoke. Hi Quit, I don't drink, so I'm not sure this would work, but could you give yourself a limit, and absolutely NOT go over that limit? Good luck. Not cravin', never cavin'. Hi quitordie, Smoking increases your metabolism, so they usually advise that you cut back on caffiene when you quit. Your body won't use it up as fast so you're more likely to get edgy. I would imagine the same would hold tru for alcohol. The same amount of alcohol you used to drink is likely to affect you more strongly now. I also found that a drink helped take the edge of the craves. I didn't drink often before and rarely drink nowm but during the first months of my quit I had a glass or two every night. (I never did associate drinking with smoking). So, I definately think you need to set your self limits so you don't overdo. Educate yourself about the affects of alcohol (i bet that sister site is as good as this one!). As golferman says "knowledge is power!" Congratulations on your quit(s)!! Hi QuitorDie, When I quit, I was used to drinking a US beer or two each evening. The quit made me look forward to those beers a lot more, as they took the edge off the cravings. I admit that they 'went to my head' a lot faster than they had before I quit. For this reason, I decided only 1 beer before dinner and maybe one with, unless I had a glass of wine with dinner instead. I'm a Brit. by the way. By limiting myself, I did not replace one addiction with another. Now, over 1 year quit, my drinking habits have neither increased or decreased....Well.....we live in France now, so maybe I have an extra glass of wine now and again. As Sheller said, just watch that you do not NEED that drink....at that point you do need to be careful. I was of the opinion when I quit, that whatever it took I would not smoke a cigarette, and whatever helped me was OK. I may have been lucky, but there is also no need to become paranoid about alcohol either. Just be aware, that your body cannot tolerate the same amount of caffeine, alcohol and other substances that it could when you were smoking. Equally, it may crave things you did not crave when smoking, such as candy sweet things and, just maybe, alcohol. Take one day at a time and be careful. Well done for getting this far. WAHTEVER IT TAKES, JUST DON'T SMOKE!!! Lolly. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 11/25/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 413 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 14,477 Amount Saved: 2065 Life Gained: Days: 57 Hrs: 13 Mins: 14 Seconds: 28
