It was really touching to read your story. I know some will say you were crazy to start up again especially when faced with the evidence of what smoking can do. I was crazy in that I never started until late in life - what was I thinking. This is my first attempt at quitting and I'm using a patch - so far it seems to be working well for me - I haven't had any cravings - might be something you could check on with your Doc. Hang in there and come to this site when you feel the craving - there are lots of inspirational stories........Good Luck My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/22/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 1 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 42 Amount Saved: $10 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 5 Mins: 34 Seconds: 19

Hi Papakraut, Sorry to hear your story, it must have been very difficult. At the same time you seem to be a strong person so take all the advise you can get here and keep strong. I am quitting in a few hours and i'm determined to make it this time. I had stopped for 2 months last year and went back on the cigarettes. But this time, they're definitly over. I am doing it for my family, my friends but first of all for myself. I find that reading other people' stories is very encouraging, we're all in the same boat! Take care of yourself and keep strong! cat =^.^=

Hi, I am new to this group but it is my third major quit attempt in 2 yrs. My fiance and I quit Feb. 11th, 2004. 60 days into that quit, he became ill,(never sick before that) first diagnosed with bronchitis, turned out to be lung cancer stage 4. He passed away May 11th 2004--exactly 90 days after our quit. You may have already guessed, I started again 3 days before he passed away--in the outside smoking area of the hospital--how dumb is that? OK, I smoked more than ever before for the next 1.5yrs+, and then on December 10th, 2005, some guy walked into my office and smelled so badly of smoke that I almost choked. All I could think of is "Do I smell like that?" December 11th I picked up some Commit Lozenges and quit again. fell off that wagon February 7th. Could list a bunch of excuses--none of them good. I said "done" again Sunday Night at 11;30. I don't want cigs, lozenges, anything--I just want to be done smoking. I don't know why this is ao hard, but I am currently suffering major craves. I can't even rember if they lessened at this point, they are so bad. I am hanging on by my fingertips, hoping this group and its support will keep me going in the right direction--you all seem so successful, and it almost seems easy --but I know it isn't. Thanks to all of you for your incredible words of support--What a great place to come when having a crave. I like the happier place image and prayers aren't hurting much either. NRTs are very expensive, I was using the Commit lozenges, and the bottom line is--I blew the quit and wasted the money! That is why I just want to quit, period. Holding my breath and hoping I can make it till Monday--Thanks again all-- AnnMarie My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/20/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 3 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 190 Amount Saved: $45 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 10 Mins: 41 Seconds: 52

Welcome papakraut, you have come to the right place. You will find all kinds of tools to use. I am so sorry for your loss. My husband died 11 months ago of lung cancer. So I know where you are. We had also quit. His was so fast we found out on March 7, 2005 and he died on March 31, 2005. And 10 days later my sister died of ovarian cancer,8 months before that my grandson was killed in an auto accident. And then on Christmas Eve my son died. And guess what I started smoking again, good decision right. Then I began to get very short of breath and that was scary, so on Jan 7th, 2006 I smoked my last cig. I am on the patch. I know that they are expensive but this is just for 10 weeks. After that the money is yours. I wish that there was some way you could buy them. But I hope by the time you read this your cravings are much better. Keep your will power high. And vist here often. :) Sunshine My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/7/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 48 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 830 Amount Saved: $168 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 0 Mins: 39 Seconds: 25

Hi there and welcome, I agree - it is not easy at all. If it were we would all have given up ages ago and this site would not exist. But we just have to accept that and get on with it :p The key is to be positive no matter how hard it gets and come here and vent on us when you need to because we know exactly what it's like and are probably going thru the same feelings right at the same moment. You know you can do it and you want to do it - thats why you're here - right. Papakraut, I am so sorry to hear about your fiance. It had to be devastating for you. Your reaction to smoke more than ever almost sounds like you just went into total denial and closed your eyes tight. I am glad that they are open now. Your past experience will help you to get through this. Cold Turkey (I did it) is the worst in the beginning first week and then gets better. Try to look to the positive aspects of quitting as your go through the next week. Try to imagine something or some place in the future that will be your 'happy place'. It will be the place where you will be when you no longer smoke and you have decided that it is your turn to be happy. ACTUALLY SIT DOWN WITH YOUR EYES CLOSED AND IMAGINE THIS PLACE.. maybe a garden you will create/grow this spring or a place you love to go to and spend carefree time. Use this image as a diversion when you need to. It is where you are going.. most important thing is to be positive.. The first week will be hard.. but soon you will need to stop letting smoking occupy your time.. and move on and away. Sorry if this sounds too corny.. it worked for me.. and I love my happy place.. I am smokefree there and my life is on track and it is my turn to be successful and happy there. You can do it !!! Hang Tuff.. What a rough time you've had. You hasve done the right thing exactly by quitting again, and also coming here. It's not that it's easy on any of us, but the difference the people here make to each other is that spirits are high, encouragement is overflowing and basically we keep each other lifted up if you know what I mean. It has made ALL the difference to my quit, and to most others who post here. Keep it up and stick around, post and read loads!!
