THE DAY WILL COME WHEN YOU DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT SMOKING !

I quit smoking about 10 years ago. After about 6 months I didn't even think about it. In fact, the smell even started bothering me. I was so far from being a smoker that I even stared at smokers and wondered how they could do it so often.. everyday of their lives.. I was off smoking for about a year and a half. I started back when I was with a bunch of people at a new job who smoked. I literally had to force myself and pretend to enjoy it. It tasted so bad and I was washing my mouth out for a few days. Stupid me !!! It took about a week to get over the pretending and the addiction kicked right in. Because I have personally experienced not feeling any cravings after quitting (6 months), I believe that the future does not hold a lifetime of cravings. It must be a mind over matter thing. I don't dare watch people smoke yet (no way.. I'm hiding from them right now.. lol) Positive thoughts.. good things to come... :) Chris My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/1/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 3 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 99 Amount Saved: $10.5 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 10 Mins: 4 Seconds: 31

I quit almost 20 years ago. After three years, it didn't even occur to me. I started missing it when I as studying for the bar. I was so tense, and the pressure so overwhelming and my concentration so poor that I just decided to start smoking again. I went out and bought a pack. Now, it's 20 years down the line. So far (knock on wood) it isn't nearly as bad as it was that first time.

It's so hard to be in a position where the junkie thoughts seem logical (ie. in a bar with friends who smoke and after a drink or two). I am not much of a drinker these days and I am thinking of never having another drink ever. I have never legally taken a drink without smoking. Every time (at least the vast majority) I have taken that first smoke after having quit, it has been after a drink or two. I just don't think alcohol is important enough to risk taking that first smoke. I want this quit to stick!

My boyfriend quit 11 days ago and yesterday he webt with some friends to a bar and he slipped. When he got home I thought - yucks, he's been in a bar - oh, how it stinks! and then it occured to me - I felt it in his breath. "You smoked!" I said. "Yes", he replied. "And wasn't it awful? The taste and all?" I asked. And he replied: "No, actually it was quite enjoyable". I went to bed totally upset and had to feel that smell near me until I finally fell asleep. In the morning I just stuffed the washing machine with my boyfriend's clothes, the ones he wore last night and with the sheets.and washed everything. Up until a few hours ago I felt like I had that smell in my hair again. I told this story because it seems my boyfriend still enjoyed cigarettes after 10 days of staying off but I, after almost 40 days, seem to just hate the smell. If I hate it that much, will it be possible to ever start again? Maybe yes, but I certainly hope not. Messa, Don't be too hard on your boyfriend. Everyone has different quits and that's makes everyones experience different. We have similar quit dates and it seems you don't want to smoke - I'd still love one most of the day - I'm just not going to do it. Support and educate your boyfriend and remember - if we don't want to quit we won't quit. THAT HAS TO BE THERE FIRST. In all sincerity Peter My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/8/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 33 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 498 Amount Saved: $231 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 12 Mins: 16 Seconds: 26

Good thread Chris :) -- Messa I want to address your boyfriend saying 'he enjoyed it' by telling you a story my grandfather once told me. There was a man hunting in the woods and he accidentally shot himself in the leg. He told himself, "I'm going to bleed to death!" Immediatly his heart rate increased. In turn the blood in his veins pumped faster through his body and he bled to death before help could arrive. Now, there was another man hunting in the woods and wouldn't you know it, he accidentally shot himself in the leg! (stay with me ;)) This man told himself, "I'm okay! I need to remain calm and tie my shirt around my leg." This man's heart rate remained steady and he was still alert when help arrived several hours later. --- We have the ability to make ourselves believe anything! Unfortunetly, sometimes misguided beliefs lead to death. That's certainly true for smoking. We convince ourselves we enjoy it, we need it to concentrate, to cope, to live a normal life. However, none of those things are true. The reality is smoking taste bad, smells bad, it distracts us from addressing problems or truely coping with issues in a productive way. And it leads to illness and death! You all hang tough and stay focused on the truth. U are doN good! :) ~all the best N2k My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/20/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 174 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,828 Amount Saved: $870 Life Gained: Days: 16 Hrs: 12 Mins: 23 Seconds: 26
