Work - Social and Smoke Breaks

18 years ago 0 254 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
hey kiwi - i agree with rusty - it's important to take breaks, especially now you don't want to deprive yourself and become bitter with this quit.... do you have to take your breaks at a scheduled time? perhaps for the first little while it may help to vary the time of day, since you are no longer dictated by nicodemon as to when to feed the addiction! I work from home, so i make my own breaks, but I too have stopped going outside (use to sit on the patio, read a magazine or book and smoke for 10 minutes). Now I either play with the cats, make a cup of tea and surf this site, or go bug my husband (who also works from home). You may come up with your own type of "break" and it may not resemble what you use to do, but that's OK. Just reward yourself with getting away from working. You deserve it! Hi there, I work in an office environment on computers & office bound during my Working Day. Like most of you i would have smoke breaks usually every 45 minutes which would include morning / afternoon tea & lunch. During these breaks i would go outside for 10 minutes & colaborate my thoughts / take 5 / take in the natural daylight / de-stress / breath fresh air & catch up on office gossip.... all whilst having a cigarette. I would always look forward to & enjoy these breaks with other friendly smoking co-workers & always outside as there is no smoking in or around any workplace here in New Zealand since i can remember. I found giving up these breaks the damned hardest thing i ever had to do as these were my 'recharge breaks'. Since i quit i've also stopped taking morning, afternoon tea & lunch breaks. I don't associate with smoking co-workers anymore as we've sort of drifted apart since my quit and i find conversation with non-smoking co-workers sterile ? ie. they like to talk about themselves & sport alot, either which i'm not into. Now my breaks consists of an occasional walk around the block at lunchtime. Sometimes i would feel sad about it. Don't get me wrong, i don't mind the lack of breaks as i do enjoy my work, but I've also noticed a manager & a co-worker here at work both ex-smokers of 3 years that don't stop for morning / afternoon tea or lunch either, they work through the day without any breaks also. What i would like to know is.. 1. Does anyone else have the same issue ? 2. is this a trend developing between ex-smokers ? 3. What have you done to get around it ? 4. do smokers make better conversation ? sorry for rambling but i look forward to seing your comments. Hi Kiwi, Whoever said you have to be a smoker to get a break??? I don't know about New Zealand, but in the US, labor laws require that an employer give two fifteen minute breaks + lunch for every eight hours. You should still take those breaks, get your fresh air, turn your face to the sun, collect your thoughts, and thank the stars that you are now a non-smoker. Actually it is quite important to take breaks...keeps you from feeling deprived. So get out there and claim your space in the break world! Kiwi, A quick thought about the ex-smokers at your work and breaks. Maybe their own craving avoidance is not going for these breaks. Like you said, smokers take more breaks than non-smokers. I totally agree! This is a known fact :). Therefore, I could agree with a trend with these ex-smokers. If you need to have an afternoon tea/break then do so. Do you have a lounge or a common room within your office environment? Also, check to see how many breaks you are allowed within your department. Your daily schedule is changing! This is a good change! Be positive and make the best of your new life as an ex-smoker! Great post! Melanie _______________________ The SSC Support Team
