Session 4 Group Walkthrough

Hi Strength18...

You know what I myself am guilty of the "I should have..." statements. For example I say "Oh maybe I should have said this instead of that, or maybe I should have done that instead of this". Instead I need to focus more on, the positive things that came from doing the things that have happened or the way things were done. Afterall we can't change the past.

I also noticed that I have negative thoughts when it comes to what I think other people think of me. Sometimes, and for no reason at all, I think people don't like me. I know it's a bit silly and childish but I can't help it...if someone doesn't say hello to me at work in the morning for example, I'll assume that I did something to bother them and they are mad at me. Instead I think I am going to come up with other reasons taht do not necessarily put this blame on me...

How about the others, how has session 4 been for you?

Hi everyone,

Session 4 is all about challenging the negative thoughts. This is something I struggle with everyday. I need to get better at writing things down (my thought records). I often work through the program and keep everything in my head, I will need to start writing everything down as this is supposed to help.

Working through session 4, I learned that I am notorious for doing the "should" statements. Everyday I am talking to people and saying "I should be doing this...." or " I should want that....". I have decided that from now on, when I catch myself in the midst of making a "should" statement, I will change it to and I "will" or I "want" statement. I will see if this helps my mood and feelings this week.

Are you guys also culprits of the "should" statements or is it just me?

Members,

If you are just joining us, we are working as a group to help each other to work through the Depression Centre program a week at a time. If you have already started the program feel free to add your thoughts. You may even decide to review this session for the purpose of this group discussion.

If you are not at Session 4 yet please check back in the forums and find the discussion on the session you have completed, add your thoughts and view what others have had to say.

Our goals for this session are to

  • Help you to review your Thought Records to get a better understanding of the relationship between what you’re thinking, feeling and doing
  • Discuss some common problems people have when keeping Thought Records
  • Talk about some specific kinds of problem thinking in depressed people
  • Give you some homework to help you to identify specific types of problems in your own thinking.
What did you learn in Session 4? Have you been able to identify any cognitive distortions in your thinking? How do you think this has affected you?
