Topic: Rebuilding Your Self-Esteem

12 years ago 0 1022 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
My low self-esteem is all of my own making, I reckon.

My belief is that there is always a reason beyond ourselves whether we know it or not...
I don't see how anyone can live in today's world... as it is... and not suffer from self-esteem issues.
On the surface, this is not a kind and nurturing world.  It is very competitive and demanding.
Those of us who are introverts are bombarded by the cacophony of an extroverted society.
We never match up to the images of perfection with which we are flooded daily.

So, I reckon... it ain't just you.

Once upon a time, I found comfort in thinking my depression was all my fault which allowed me the illusion control... if it was my fault, then I surely I could fix the problem... if I just tried hard enough, found the right therapist, lived right, quit being so selfish, got more education, became more spiritual, etc., etc., etc.

Like jdoe I've had several different influences. The most important and closest people have given positive feedback, in their own way. Almost all my negative feedback came from strangers and my imagination. I was bullied incessantly in school. Even at the age of 36 I'm still haunted by that.

I've attempted to find negative reinforcements or messages from the important people in my life, and can't think of any. I've been surrounded by supportive people all my life. My low self-esteem is all of my own making, I reckon.

The people in my life growing up had a profound effect on my self esteem. Some were good and some bad. I think about them often. I am looking for ways to replace the negative feedback from some of them and focus on the positive feedback I received instead.
Their voices still effect me even though they have passed..I am so looking forward to learning new strategies to boost my self esteem....

Members,

Has an illness, addiction or other left your self-esteem in the gutter? In the weeks to come, we will be exploring various strategies to help rebuild your self-esteem:

What is self-esteem?

The level of self-esteem you have is gained via reactions important people have had to you throughout your life. Starting off with your parents, it is further shaped by your siblings, superiors, friends and significant others. One primary factor in the development of self-esteem involved the positive or negative reinforcement or messages you receive from these people.

Before we can begin rebuilding, we encourage you to take make a list of the people in your life who have played an important role in your life. Were they supportive or negative forces in your life? What did they do for your self-esteem?
