B12 deficiency - woo hoo

14 years ago 0 1044 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Samantha,
I cannot wait until tomorrow to discuss with Dr.  I also see my pdoc on Wednesday.  And that is when i am scheduled to get another B12 shot.  I know I'm supposed to start that new job tomorrow - filing out paperwork and all that.  I hope it goes well.  Yesterday I had some awake times.  unfortunately they occurred late evening and into the night.  So I am unsure how that will effect me today.  However, if I feel I need sleep; I'm not going to deprive myself of it.  I gave me permission to sleep when I feel like it.  :)
I'll keep you posted.

Hi goofy,

Be sure to clear everything up with your doctor before making any decisions. I am glad you feel rested up. At this point, you need to do what's best for you! Always remember, your energy levels and overall well-being are a huge priority. You are an extremely kind and compassionate individual. Therefore you deserve to have the energy to spread this to those around you. Please check in soon, we all really care about you.

Sid, I too have had statins in the past and refuse to take them.  I won't get on my soap box about them, but I understand where you are coming from with them.  The medication she gave me is supposedly prescription strength fish oil - hmmm, lovasa.   I'm not taking it today and see how I do.  I decided since I started both the same day, I can see if not doing one helps (no choice with the B12 it's already in my arm).  She said my cholesterol and trigl.... aren't that high and looking at the norms for those and where mine are - thinking I could save my liver and kidneys a bit.  However, will not make that decision without talking to her first.

Oh well, I feel rested now, but I have to go take my meds; will see what happens shortly.  I know there's a direct link to them.  okay, so here goes another day - here's to not sleeping all day.

Goofy,

I am sorry to here you have not been feeling well the last couple of days.  I didn't have any side effects when I was on the B12  or the omega 3 fish oil but I did have a problem with the statin drug.  I was on statin medication for 6 months for my cholesterol and triglycerides my levels came down but my legs got to hurting me so bad and I was so tired that I had a hard time just walking into the grocery store and would  have to wait in the car while my partner went in to the store to get our supplies.  I had to stop taking the statins and when my blood work was done last my levels had stayed down not perfect but down. I am now trying to control them with diet and exercise haven't had them tested in a while, but I am back going to the store and stuff.  You may want to call and talk to your Dr. as soon as you can and let them know how you are feeling and don't forget to mention the headaches.  I hope you will be feeling better soon. Let us know how you are doing.

Good evening Goofy,

You should definitely talk to the doctor if you think the headache and lack of energy might have something to do with the B12s or the new medications, it's better to just make sure.

Let us know how you are doing.

okay, I'm not woo hooing anymore!  I've done nothing but stay in the bed since Wednesday.  I got out a bit Thurs was absolutely worn out and came home.  Was going to get my grandbaby Thurs. evening but not enough energy.  I don't know if  there are side effects of the B12 or it's the new medications for high cholesterol.  I also have a headache.  I probably should have called the dr. but I didn't wake up in time to do so this afternoon and I kept thinking she said in a couple of days I'd feel better.  I don't know if it's depression or side effects.  I don't think it matters, or does it?

Thanks y'all.  I did a bit 'o research last night about B12 and what causes low levels and/or malabsorption.  There are many things some of which can be medication (more than listed here) seizure medications, long term use of medications used to treat acid reflux and hormones like birth control pills and or hormone replacement therapy.  I'm interested in these three because I take all three.  The Acid Reflux and the hormones for 9 years and the lamictal for 2 years.  I'm a bit frustrated that I can find these things out on the internet but I have 4 medical professionals - all of whom are kept informed by me of medications I am on - a gastroenterologist, a general practitioner, a psychiatrist and a gynecologist and not one of them - not one of them - argh!
I can't remember how long she siad it would take me to feel better.  Is it one to two days or one to two weeks.  Sid, she (the general practioner) also wants me to take a multi-vitamin but gonna work on this first.  I also am going to start take omega-3's for cholesterol and something else for triglycerites (sp?).  I don't like taking all these medications.

So Sid/Lost, did the B12 help and/or other vitamins do anything regarding the depression?  I like the way you both tippie-toed around the "growing old gracefully" and "mature".  I don't know about y'all buy I'm getting old.  lol

Goofy,

Good news on the B12 shots.  I had low b12 also had shots for about a year.  The shots helped with the thinking and I am now off the the shots and doing sublingual b12 tabs under the tongue when I feel I need them.  I also started taking Centrum Silver a multivitamin/multimineral  supplement for the last month  and it has helped me a great deal with energy, leg cramps and I seem to be able to think more clearly.   I never really liked vitamins but these ones really seem to help me.  Just though I'd let you know about them in case you want to give them a try down the road.   I find that this growing older gracefully can be a real challenge.   Good Luck with the vitamin therapy.  Keep us posted on how it works out.

Sounds really hopeful. And you made it happen yourself.

How's it going so far?

Goofy-
I think it's great that something so simple has been detected and you are able to get help in that area.  I have had a similar experience where my Vit. D levels were very low.  Not uncommon in women, especially ones of more mature age (like how I put that?).  Anyway, there have been a slew of studies done that links Vit D dificiencies with depression.  Knowing this and being able to supplement my diet and sun-exposure with vitamins has helped me immensely. (even if I sound completely morbid in other posts)
This is exciting news and I am hopeful that things start looking up for you.
Good Luck!
