Myth or Fact

Great questions Diva!

The increase in depression rates could be for a number of reasons. The criteria for diagnosis has changed, coping and events within our own society have also changed throughout the years and this could contribute to the increase in depression rates. However, it is difficult to be determine the specific contributors to this increase as there are a number of possible factors.

Members, what do you think could be the reason why rates of depression are on the rise?

Why is that? Is it that we are getting better at diagnosing it and thus we find more cases or is depression on the rise? And if depression is on the rise, why is that? Is it due to societal factors or others?  Anyway, this fact just struck me as interesting.  If anyone has answers please let me know!

Members,

Fact: The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that by 2020 major depression will be second only to heart disease as the leading cause of disability worldwide.
