Myth or Fact?

Hi:

What has helped me in the past is journal writing, keeping my own mood diary I created, being able to talk to people to vent, even if they are from the criis line.  I talk to people and I usually have it solved on my own, I just needed that voice on the other line. I used to keep a book on questions to ask my therapist and his answers.  I could not always remember and I wrote it down, and today I read how I was in 2004.  In 2004 I went to outpatient STAT program and learnt many things I have forgotten.  Some things that have helped me lately is deep breathing, mindful mediation, gentle stretching with relaxation directed by a professional.  Being able to have "me time" and to time myself for the activity.  For example I could go on the computer for 12 hrs straight without a break or eat etc...as I loose track of time.  Setting the microwave timer gives me an auditory reminder.  I am continue reading my stress management workbook on relaxation techniques. Then I will work on types of communication and to be more assertive in my relationships. Have a good week....

I have always "known" what depression was but it never really occured to me that  that's what I have had on and off from the age of 13,  just months after having had encephalitis. This past year depression came back to haunt me unlike ever before though.  It has been a living HELL.  There are many times I wish I could "block" out the past horrors I have been through, block out the depression.  It is something I would wish on no one.  It is a hidden illness unlike cancer.

Myth: People who claim to be depressed are weak and just need to pull themselves together. There's nothing anyone else can do to help.

Fact: Depression is not a weakness, but a serious mental health disorder. Many people suffer from depression but there are ways to treat and happily live with it. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), medication and individual or group therapy can all really help individuals suffering from depression.  Share with us what has worked for you in the past.
