Well this is encouraging news! I have been having a hard time getting started this time. After having 2 relapses, motivation to work hard at it, just wasn't there. hopefully this will get me moving. Last thing I want is to go thru it again.

Hi Sarah,

I've found them very useful. It's exactly how it's described below.. when you stop using the techniques you get more vulnerable to stress and get faster depressed again. Sometimes I'm wondering how are you able to see my situation so well??

I've actually just had a relapse. Yeah, I have to take medicines again. I've started with this program that I felt very useful and after session 8 I "suddenly" didn't find the time to continue with the next ones - so I've got more stressed and finally I got a relapse. I even had to spend some days in the hospital because of this.

I just have to do it again and continue with the next sessions. Don't see yet where I can cut from my 24 hours but have to do all efforts. Health goes first!

Thank you for following up with us on this.

wildcat,

It is good to hear that you have found the tools helpful in coping with your emotions.

Members, what has your experience been with CBT techniques? Have you found them useful?

Well, at least it will not be like the first time!  completely alone and clueless.  Wondering if I was finally going crazy like my father always said I would !

hi faryal
in my case, being bipo, the tools help me weather the storms and remember that I have not been depressed since forever and will not be depressed forever.

i just hope the episodes space themselves at longer intervals... back to the 3 to 5 years before the meds mucked things up!

Planning for the Return of Depression I

No matter how much progress you’ve made in the program, we want you to be prepared for the return of depression (relapse) and a worsening of your symptoms.

Below are some common reasons for relapse and some suggestions for what you can do to prevent it.

You haven’t achieved a significant (50%) reduction in the severity of your symptoms

If you’ve made some gains but are not 50% better than when you started this program, depression really still has a foot in the door. If this program is working for you, keep going! If you still have significant symptoms of depression, it may take you longer to get a 50% reduction in symptoms. If you’re not making progress, consult your family doctor or another health care provider.

You’ve stopped using the CBT techniques

It often happens that when people start to feel better and get back to their lives, they stop using the CBT techniques that helped them get well. When you stop using CBT techniques you can become more vulnerable to stress. The longer you don’t use the techniques, the harder it is to dust them off and use them again when you encounter a stressful situation or negative life event.

But the solution to this problem is pretty simple. If you notice that you’re getting very stressed or depressed, start using the CBT techniques again. Come back to the Depression Program and start reviewing the techniques. The techniques that worked for you the first time around will work again. Over time you can become better and better at noticing the early warning signs of depression and getting back to the CBT techniques sooner rather than later.

The good news is that you now know how to challenge your symptoms. You have the tools you need to get through stressful life events. If the CBT techniques worked for you, your next episode of depression, if it happens, probably won’t be as bad or last as long.
