Mom of 3,

Thanks for you thoughts. I agree, music is in a sense a soundtrack for your thoughts, what a great way of looking at music.
Members, what kind of music do you enjoy listening to?

I think music in general has effects on people, music is a matter of personal taste and if it appeals to you then it is more likely to help with mood and processing skills. It can motivate and it can make you cry.  I can think of some classical pieces that would not improve my mood as some are of the tone and tempo that causes me to feel anxious or down.  It is likewise with other genres.  My favorite type of music is rock.  There are some that really improve my mood, some help me to let out frustrations, and some that make me worse.  I need to change the station or song when the song makes me anxious or down.
I do believe that instrumental pieces (classical or otherwise) are more mood enhancing because you don't have and words to wrap you mind around.  In this way the music becomes a soundtrack for your thoughts and if soothing can assist in reaching a more positive decision.

Its good old country music for me,it can pick you up and bring you down it'll open just about every feeling you have.If it improves any of your  intellectual ability I don't know but the right song no mater what you listen to can put a smile on just about anyones face. If  I was to give classical a try (not saying I will) what would you sugest?

Members,

Our focus in recent weeks has been on stress management. The positive effects of classical music have been widely studied. Although the consensus that classical music increases intellectual ability in children has not yet been confirmed, it has been shown that music does improve:

°          Stress levels & burnout rates in the workplace

°          Overall mood

°          Behavioral symptoms in older adults with Alzheimer, brain injuries or other cognitive deficits

°          Spending: Stores who play classical music have been shown to have higher sales than those who do not.

°          Crime: In a landmark study, the London Transit System saw a decrease in robberies, assault on workers & vandalism.

°          Retention in college students studying

°          Overall stress levels & decreased anger in individuals with road rage when driving
