Hey, Firecracker, I've started as low on the exercise scale as anyone can by doing leg-foot raises from a sitting position( I have hip, knee and ankle arthritis.) But it's all helping and especially so since I stopped smoking in January... I'm feeling much better physically and mentally ...

fire, Make a pact to start slow and work your way up. If exercise was a help to you, then use this to progress and get back in there. It is hard to get motivated, but start with something less grueling, like walking and stretching. Josie, Health Educator

Reading through this thread because I'm going through the exact same feelings right now - it feels good to be able to share with others. I was once going to the gym 3x/week and it's been 2 months and I haven't gone! :-O I just don't feel motivated, work has been bringing me down (which I'm going to have to learn to cope with work drama and that's a huge reason of why I'm here), and even the prospect of visiting somewhere warm soon (which normall would have been a major motivator, isn't helping.

Hi itsjustme, gabs, twister, wildcat, maggie, Maybe I get a hint for you. I know this problem only very well. I also never had problems with weight - until I took antidepressiva. Then I gained 15 kgs and since then I just have not been able to loose any gramms. And it depressed me sooo much, not fitting in my nice clothes or the designer clothes or just see my "new"self in the mirror. Then, upon advice of my sister I ate only salad with yogurt in the evenings or even nothing. It worked. I could not do this every evening, but 3 times in a week. Mornings I checked - yes, it made a difference, so I continued doing so until I lost 4 kgs. also: I found it a very efficient way to loose weight: to take the stairs - only two floors at one time - then a break - then again two floors. Later during the day doing the same once more. They are only a few steps but with a meaningful effect. You do not need to do too much at the beginning - e.g.just two floors. But continue doing it - whatever you do. Its important to let your metabolism know, from now on it has to work a bit faster. Actually it motivated me a lot, when I checked each morning, how much I lost -maybe only 400 gramms, but it made me more optimistic and gave me the motivation to continue. There are of course other tips, like: having a break of 5-6 hours between two meals, or several combinations of different foods, but I really think that only excercises can speed up your metabolism - as wildcat said, it is currently slowed down because of the meds. One more tip I tried for a better well-being: doing something creative I like. e.g. painting, playing piano - it is extremely important for me to do these on a regular basis. It makes me then feel better slowly but steady.

itsjustme, Starting small is the way to go! Make little goals every week to achieve and prepare yourself. Make a shopping list of healthy snacks and foods and prepare your weekly menu on Sunday. Package and label everything! It is easy to get caught up in the "grab and go" snacks and foods, so plan to be good! Have a treat basket at work with fruits, veggies and dip, and low calorie snacks. Cut out your sodas and juices and drink lots of water to help rid your body of toxins. Step by step work into an exercise routine and pick an activity that will motivate you. Join a sports team or walking group. The DVD's will come in time. Exercise can be fun! Josie, Support Specialist

Hi Gabs, Thanks for the replies. I did eat an apple at work yesterday. The office manager brought them first time and i brought my apple home but i never ate it. I lied to my coworkers and said it was good. Isn't that weird of me? Then this 2nd time my office manager brought more apples, i ate one and it tasted really good. i used to love eating vegetables. i never could eat fruit i forced myself to. it never became a habit, but eating vegetables were. now i can't seem to eat properly all the time. when eating treats, i can have one or 2 but i would have one or 2 every day that's not good. congrats on being able to resume pilates!

I have been told that I can now resume my pilates class. Well yippee. Why dont I feel good about that, well no excuse not to excsersise anymore! But what about the main problem, lack of motivation. Also after that 1st chocolate biscuit, you just may as well have another and so it goes on. How can you diet when depressed? I have stocked up on apples vegetables etc but its cold now and I want comfort food. Sweet stodgy carbs. They make me feel better. They also make me fat! I am with you on the fact that I cant fit into a lot of my clothes. That also depresses me. A vicious circle. If anyone has the answer please post!

i can't seem to start exercising! i feel really bad about it. and i feel so fat and ugly, i have such nice office clothing that i can't wear because i don't fit into them. it's terrible. that would've been a motivator for me before, but it's not anymore. I do walk everywhere on the weekends. i also started to watch what i've been eating at work, i used to eat bad foods and snack on treats at work. so i think i'm starting small. but i really want to start the dvds!

Hi itsjustme, It is great you can think of the exercise as positif... have you tried to us it as a motivator?

hi, thanks for the replies. i told myself to start i will walk home from the subway on weekdays, i did that i couple times then i got lazy. then this past weekend, i actually walked to the main st., i did not take the bus. boy was i tired! i walked to the main street to run errands. then i walked to clear my mind, it was a rough weekend. it helped, but i was so tired! i have to try again this weekend. but i really really want to start an exercise program i did a year ago, it worked so well, it was with dvds. i feel so fat and that adds to my feeling down. but thanks for the replies i feel better knowing i'm not alone with this problem.
