Hi wildcat, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy focuses on changing behavior, thinking, and mood. According to CBT theory, our thoughts, moods and behaviors are all closely related. Basically, how we think and what we do affects how we feel. The goal is to change the negative styles of thinking and behaving that are often associated with depression. Our thoughts, behaviours and resulting physical sensations are all closely inter-related. I encourge you to work through the online program. Here you may find some of the answers you are looking for. Cognitive behavioural approaches have clients identify their goals, whether it be to change their thinking pattern or behaviour, while self-evaluating their own progress by assessing if goals are met. You are activley involved in your own treatment. To put it more simply, the way we think about something can in turn influence our behaviours and feelings about it. You have asked some very important and thought provoking questions but they are beyond the scope of our role as moderators here. Please speak with your health care provider for more specific information on these issues. Your local pharmacist is also a great resource for information on how the medications work. Hi Josie, I am very active in my healing. I naturally think about the way I think. I am exploring my notions of sensitivity versus vunerability with my psychologist. Once a month we see each other to discuss a problem and this month's challenge was to find ways to stop the negative thought spiral. I find myself in an emotion charged situation and react then I tend to over analyse and become paralised with indecision... this triggers a whole series of negatif, self-defeating thoughts... So I need to learn that once the reaction is complete, the situation needs to be let go. Also, I have a general anxiete "disorder" and OCD. So weekly I attend a self-help group, Phobie-Zero. We pratice relaxation techniques, mental exercises, and have lots of opportunites to be desensitized to our anxiete triggers. I know medicine is to be discussed with the health professionals, but they tend to skip over the theories. I need to know the whys and they just stop at the yes-no explanation... ---do you feel ...? yes-no ---it works / it does not work bye I need the next part... why does this work? what is it meant to do to my body? why does this chemical change the physical aspects of my brain and I have a reaction in my thoughts and feelings (electrical parts)? Why will cognitive techniques work? How do thought new processes replace some medications? How will the brain do this process back-wards thoughts (electrical impulse) to control the chemical reactions? I do not think these processes are specific to me. That is why I set them here.

Wildcat, Medications do help keep the balance. Your progress is dependent on you and the assistance you receive. Be active in your progress and challenge those thoughts. Work with your doctor and pharmacist in regards to medications, side effects and dosages. They know your body and its history and you can both work on a plan that is right for you. Hi I noticed that a lot for the posts are about when their medications will take everything away? I was told that medication does not really work like that. Medication is to help my body become stable and with help I will get of the worse of my illness. I am to learn a new way of thinking to controle the worse of the ups and downs. It this because I am bipolar and OCD? or is this another way to say the same thing?
