Well I have to say that yesterday my doctor gave me this medication for the second time , and well to be honest I never took it the first time either. After reading about the meds and how they react to your bodya nd how they make you feel, well I have to say that is not for me. Now my pruse looks like a pharmacy because I keep getting these drugs filled out a nd never take them. How do I make myself take something I dont feel that I dont feel I need ?? I am suffering from something but I think it is just called life or hell, what ever works now, but I can say that I dont think that drugs ever solve the problem and feel that it only makes another another problem to my list. Sorry to be like this but these are my thoughts and the way I feel. Havea good day and hope all is good with all of you . TT

I was on Effexor for over 3 years - 150 mg per day with some side effects. Kept my mood stable, but the side effects were no fun at all. I know that they are not addictive, and that almost all anti-depressants work the same way. HOWEVER, when I came off of Effexor, I did it cold turkey - -which docs will warn you not to do. I did iot involuntarily, I was in Latin America and had my bag stolen, no way to get a refill where I was. It was a hidden blessing, as I feel I am better off now without the drug, but the withdrawal was hell, including severe mood depression, sleeplessness, and thoughts of suicide, but I was unable to get a flight out for three days anyway and the worst was over by then. I do not recommend anyone on any anti-depressant to try it this way. I think it's extremely wise to continue seeing a psychiatric professional while you are on meds, not just a family doctor, as others here have indicated, it seems that often times people only need meds for the harder periods of time in your life or because of significant emotional trauma. Pharmaceutical companies would love for you to take them for a lifetime, but that isn't always necessary. Thanks to all! Brett

Theresa, Ask your doc about Seroquel. It is a mood stabalizer and in very low dosages, it will help you sleep (non-addictive). It should also help your mood swings. I have a friend who is on this for sleep and it works very well and also cuts some of the jittery side effects of the anti-depressants may cause. j.

Thanks for your input. I know I can get the hard facts from my doc, but I am still interested in people's personal experiences and opinions.

I am sorry Theresa, I can not answer most of your medical questions about drugs or addiction to them, but I am sure your doctor can and will. I think that drugs and their actions in the brain work differently for different people, but I am sure they can have a huge effect on what you are thinking and feeling, since they interfere with the neurotransmitter metabolism in your brain. However, you can get off and the withdrawel from anti-depressants is not as hard as it may seem to you. As far as I know, they are not addictive, but of course your body will go through changes every time when it has to go through a change, either when you get on them or of them. I am off any medication for the last 5 years, so there is a way to feel somewhat stable without them. I suffered a severe postnatal depression after I had my kids. I did not no anything about it at the time, so I really did not know what had strucken me. All I had ever pictured was a lovely baby and a mother in full control of her life. Unfortenately, women are still not well informed. The other day I heard something about postnatal psychose. Not to talk you into anything, but this might be something you want to mention to your doctor.

Hello, Thank you for being available to give advice and support. I am a 33 year old female with depression. This episode started with the birth of my child about a year and a half ago. I have been trying various SSRIs and have settled with Effexor XR starting this past January. I stayed on 37.5 mg for about 6 weeks, then went up to 75mg for about 2 weeks. Even at 75mg, I had increased emotional outburst around the time of my period. One week, I filled my pill case with the wrong (lower) dosage pills I still had left. I experienced a wider range of emotions (much more love and empathy for my husband, more sadness some times, the ability to cry, LESS rage and anger, and a less aggressive physical love ... no need to squeeze my kid with my hugs of love). But, I also had a lump in my throat and my nerves were raw. This month, the depression felt full force so my doc increased my dosage up to 112.5 (we take it slowly b/c I suffer from side effects). I have been at the new dose about 10 days. Since the increase, I have had more sweating, severe insomnia and bad dreams. I cannot sleep without taking Ambien. Yesterday, I felt as suicidal as when I was taking NO meds. I am concerned some concerns I would ask members and the moderator to comment on: 1)addiction to Ambien; 2) whether the cause of the rage can be meds; and 3) how awful coming off the drug seems to be based on other postings and if I will ever be able to come off if it is so hard to deal with the withdrawl; 4) how am I suppose to keep living if the meds make me feel as bad as the depression (I have everything I ever wanted in life and cannot enjoy a thing b/c I am so numb from meds or so sad/angry from depression). Please write.
