What should I do?

I love the new name! Like I said before, your screen name is your business - I just didn't want to see you putting yourself down. In regards to the Ambien, I know nothing about any risks and/or side effects. My point was that doctors are usually reluctant to prescribe something to a person who has talked of suicide that they could potentially overdose on, especially a sleeping pill. That was my concern. I'm just speaking from my own experience here. I would just go with the cymbalta and give it chance to work for you. They may be all you need and the less meds the better. But that's just my opinion. You should do whatever works for you. Feel good about the effort you are putting forth in trying to help yourself feel better. Feel good about yourself. Let us know know you are coming along. Be well!

Well, how does this name work for you? No longer sadloozer, rather grapeape. I am curious why you asked why my dr. prescried ambien to someone who is suicidal. Is there some risk about this medication I should know about? It's only been 2 days. If there are any other risks could you please let me know. thanks. ag

I'm glad to hear you're feeling better! I took effexor which which works on the same brain chemicals as cymbalta and it helped me greatly with no noticable side effects. I'm no doctor but I am concerned as to why your doctor would prescribe ambien to someone who has expressed suicidal thoughts. In a matter of time the cymbalta should have you feeling much better and make it easier to sleep. But that's just my opinion. Dude - it's none of my business but please consider changing your screen name to something less derogatory. Be well! Good luck to you!

I went to the dr. today. A psychiatrist. He gave me ambien to help me sleep and then cymbalta as an antidepressant. I also talked to my therapist today. I shared with her my frustrations with our sessions and told her that I was mad last week at her. She told me thanks for telling her and that she needs to know when I feel this way. She also said I'm doing better about being open and telling her what's bothering me. She told me I wasn't allowing myself to be emotionally vulnerable with her, not sure what that means, but I have never cried in front of her, so my guess is that's what she's referring to. Anyway, I am feeling better for now and appreciate the support and suggestions you all gave me. I was wondering if anyone takes or has tried cymbalta and what they thought of it. Thank you all.

Thanks for your advice and suggestions. I have thought a lot about it and I know I need to change therapists, but I am so attached to her, I don't know if I can do it. I have been crying almost all day about this. I don't know how to end it with her and I really don't want to. I wish we could just be friends or something and hang out, she is just really cool like that. I'm way too attached and it absolutely kills me to think of not seeing her each week. It's like my only relationship ending. I can't handle that. I still feel like dying, that just seems like the only answer right now.

I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling well. I think you should definitely seek out another therapist and doctor for that matter as it seems that you may benefit greatly from the proper medication and therapy. Have you tried reading certain books about depression. There are many things you can do for yourself to feel better and optimistic about the future. One recommendation here - try to surround yourself with positive thoughts and energy. Even if you don't feel well eventually some positive energy will get through. For example, your screen name has a very negative connotation and puts on paper a very poor self image. Please don't think of yourself in such terms. Use your imagination and perceive your life as you would like it to be. You need to help yourself in any way you can. Be good to yourself and don't give up. Good luck to you!

Thanks for your suggestions. I have already been diagnosed with major depression and am currently not taking any medications. I went off Effexor in June. I did not find that it was effective long term. I have told my therapist the same things I am telling you. She lets me write things down and bring it to her, that's more effective than me trying to say it because I just freeze up in her office. I live in such a small town, it's hard to find another therapist, but maybe I'll look around and see what I can find. Thanks again.

sadloozer, You seem to be expressing your feelings just fine with us. Perhaps you can take our Depression Test to your therapist and write down a list of questions you want to ask her. Hand her the paper and test and let her take it from there. This test will help better assess the situation. You do need to see your doctor or a doctor, to make sure you medication is on track. As you can see, the online support group is very knowledgeable and supportive. Feel free to post with us. We are here to listen. Josie

Sadloozer, There comes a time in therapy when you get to a point where your therapist cannot do anymore for you and it is time to find someone else. This therapist apparently has not helped you with the technique she uses...maybe it is time to find someone who uses another approach. I am on my second therapist in 1 1/2 years. The first one got me as far as she could and I have been continuing with someone else. I know (from experience) that it is not easy finding someone else to see, but the uncomfortable feeling you get from her and her associates is a good indicator of your need to seek help elsewhere. If you are afraid of leaving her...try stating your problem again on your next visit and if you get the same response, thank her and tell her that YOU feel she cannot do anymore for you since she cannot get you past this point. She may be able to recommend someone outside of her practice. Keep your chin up. Remember that YOU are the one that is in control of your recovery. Do not let anyone take that from you! Good luck, and I hope you find this helpful.

I'm desperate. I have been trying to beat my depression for over 3 years now. I have been on all kinds of meds and in therapy for 3 years! I am not much of a talker and not very emotionally open with my therapist, I just can't cry in front of her. I really like my therapist, but she doesn't or hasn't done much for me since I'm still very depressed. I can't imagine not seeing her each week, but I also want to feel and be better. I'm suicidal and scared and when I tell her, she seems to get mad or real distant. She said she doesn't know what else to do with me. I feel like she and her collegues make fun of me because I've been in therapy SO long. It's not like I want to be there for that long, but I'm afraid what will happen if I'm not in therapy. When I am in crisis, she doesn't say much. My dr. doesn't return my phone calls either, so I have no place to go or anyone to talk to. I don't know why I just can't verbalize how I feel, it's just so overwhelming and I can't function. What do I do? When do you know you should be inpatient? She keeps suggesting inpatient for both my depression and a minor alcohol problem. I can't afford to be in a hospital. I am so sad, I love my therapist and I don't know why, sometimes I feel like she doesn't even care about me.
