Problems in memory can really impact someone's day to day life. Working memory is nessesary for executive functions like planning, initiating tasks, time management, problem solving and more. Imagine the anxiety you might experience if one of these areas were disrupted! Problems in working memory are quite common - people with adhd, head trauma and other mental health issues may struggle with working memory. I have heard that there are some computer programs out there that improve working memory but I am not too familiar with the evidence base around these programs. I imagine, if we could improve our memory, especially our working memory, our quality of life would likely be improved.
There are ways to make up for some of memory - making lists, schedules, eating right, exercising can all help
I'm reading a book on the types of memory and their storage location in the brain. So far it has nothing about panic attacks. but it is interesting. Thoughts are made up by or of combinations of these four different types of memory and I realized that one person could be using all four types of memory for a thought while another person might only use two for the same thought. This being so miscommunication would be easy.
According to this book memory has four types and stores these in four different parts of the brain. It also is quite clear that you can not have thought without using memory and you can not do anything without memory.
Working memory is how you start a thought or sentence. experiences around you trigger this.
Episodic memory is how you finish it. Previous experiences tell you how to do this.
Semantic memory is where you store general information. Broken down into related memories. Things like what to call something. Cities are broken down into names of cities etc.
Procedural memory is how to do things.
Look at the mess you could have if the connections got messes up or didn't work properly, or were in the wrong order.
