Herb,

This is my first message back to any post on here as I just joined a few days ago. I do understand you’re feeling uneasy speaking in public and as the post below by a professional stated it is not uncommon at all! For example my wife that is both a Boy Scout and Girl Scout troop leader that I deem as “normal” also gets the chills/ sweats/ rapid heart rate when needed to speak in front of an auditorium filled with people. In all honesty I couldn’t even imagine myself doing that as I would just pass out thinking about it. From reading and understanding what I know about panic disorders, the best thing to do if not wanting them is repeated exposure. For example the more times you make these speeches and frequently, the less you will have any problem with doing them. J In that same aspect, my family and friends say that what I do for a living would freak them out moving tens of thousands of dollars in and out every week as a retail seller.  The thing is, I do it every day so it is NO BIG DEAL. However ask me to go to the dentist or go to any mall filled with people or even a dinner out with the family or friends and “forget it” “instant panic attack” just thinking about it!!! Avoidance kicks in and everything else this program tries to teach! By your post, you are obviously extremely smart and have a well above average IQ! The only unfortunate thing is by being that way one tends to “overthink” everything that is also a trigger for panic attacks.  I am going to work through this program in hope that it can help and hope you will do the same. Best wishes… David

Welcome Herb,

You are right, you can't control the way you think just by wanting to. You need a systematic method and even that takes time and lots of practice. Some anxiety while speaking publicly is not only normal but some presenters feel it is nessesary. I think many people would actually say talking in front of others is there worst fear. So, you have certainly taken on a challenging career but with exposure and CBT I am sure you will take control of the anxiety. Never let fear control your life choices. Focus on how great it will feel once you take control of the anxiety.

Keep us updated om your progress in the program.

Welcome Herb

There are a number of reasons why a persons mind runs overtime. Bipolar being one but Bipolar people seldom have anxiety or difficulty being around people. At lest the ones I know and I know a few. That leaves just plain anxiety as the probable cause due to a higher than average ability to access memory. What is called intelligence and good imagination. Sometimes called information overload too. But that is slightly different. Don't be skeptical. My mind runs overtime and I have learned to control it in the areas I no longer want it to do that without it interfering with what I want. Not like the flat across the board that some medication does. Been there. It is a good program based on CBT and CBT has a good record for working.

Poor career choice, not if you like what you do. If you do then I'd say it is worth fighting for.

CBT done right allows you to live a normal life rather than just covering the anxiety. It would allow you to enter a room full of people and see just that not something frightening that isn't there other than in your thinking.

Hey everyone,

I recently returned to graduate school with the goal of teaching at a university, but the constant presentations have triggered a new wave of anxiety. I have always been anxious, but have managed to suck it up and push through, no matter how ugly. These days, I'm thinking I may have made a really poor career choice!

This site seems like a good resource, so I figure I'll give it a try. However, I will admit up front that I'm skeptical. People have been telling me for a long time to not think so much, but I have never been able to control my mind. I guess we'll see.
