Making excuses.

Making excuses can really hold a person back, in relationships and in life. Making an excuse is another way of avoiding...and as we all know avoiding usually just worsens the problem.

Excuses in a way, are a bit of a cognitive distortion. They prevent you from seeing reality in a way that serves your needs. So how can we challenge excuses as we would cognitive distortions?

Try not to fall into this trap. It is easy to do. When people lose cognitive function due to panic attacks or the side effects from meds, benzo's especially they sometime try to cover up by making excuses for their mistakes. This can be bad if they are obvious and if those the excuse is made to don't understand why you feel you need to. This happens too when comprehension gets fuzzy and you guess what the other person wants and you get it wrong. People do things different so this is easy to do. Better to say, oh is that what you wanted than to say that is not what you said. I can understand why people try to cover up from poor comprehension or poor memory even in those without a disorder but it is fooling no one and makes for hard feelings. Better to be felt sorry for than to be disliked, and you will become shunned except by people like me who know why you feel you need to make excuses. Anxiety and panic disorders are tough to live with especially with those that don't understand the side effects of the meds or just the side effects of the disorder.
