Mood Swings

Few people manage to age without being on some medication.
I had to stop taking anti inflammatories for my Arthritis after the perforated ulcer that nearly killed me.
Plain old anxiety can annoy ulcers by increasing acid. So I will take Ranitadine for life now. There are a lot of medications with anxiety as a side effect and some where it only shows up when in combination. Knowing this reduces it but doesn't make it go away. Some meds have really horrible side effects. Chlorathaladone, (a diuretic) causes anxiety bordering on panic and sore muscles and fatigue. Furosamide (another Diuretic) doesn't.
Penicillin and tetracyclines cause anxiety in me but cephalasporins don't except cephtriaxone. But it is long acting and that may be the problem. Again someone else may not have these problems.
Anxiety and panic can come from other things than life situations but the combination can be horrible. CBT will handle a lot but if it is medication it usually has to be stopped or changed.

Hello Hugs

The only thing I don't like about mood swings is they interfere with getting anything done.
As for spending, that depends more on whether I have the money. Ten thousand dollars for a tractor does take some thought. A microwave not much.

Hi Davit,
I try to not make big decisions when my moods are off.  Being part of a social circle would give me the emotional shock absorbers to buffer the higher/lower/unrealistic moods.

They are supposed to be there, they are only markers of how you feel. Just like anxiety and panic. It is us that exaggerates them and makes them something they are not.

Cara,
I left a great paying job, and advice given to me regarding moods.  Just learn to ride them out, and they'll level off.  I couldn't grasp the concept, but it's actually "ok" to feel uncomfortable

Hi Hugs4u.

I couldn't agree more but sometimes those emotions scares me and I worry I'll go back to those panic and anxiety days I once had:(

Hi Cara,
I'm trying to take responsibility for myself by admitting that I'm responding in a way that isn't constructive.  Davit's coping mechanism is to focus on something else.  To focus on the emotion, is to make it snowball and aggrandize.
.
I guess I'm like a dog off their leash, if all I do it let myself get agitated over things.  I am grown up, I think.

But sometimes people know what bothers me, and they'll "press buttons".  Part of the growing up I want to complete, is to know as many of those buttons as possible, and curb my inappropriate reactions.

I also avoid situations which wouldn't help me, and get me in the "wrong" mood.  I grew up in a religious tradition which states we "...should avoid temptations of sin...", but that goes for awkward stuff too.

I was reading about meditation, and it seems that the stillness we can get from that practise can reduce the emotional "range". I need to practise the progressive relaxation more often.

Some actually want emotional turmoil, so they watch horror films, or go to an amusement park roller coaster.  I doubt that a refugee from a 3rd world country which is war-torn, seeks those films or rides.

Life would be boring without changes in our emotions though, wouldn't it?

I get mood swings also. I get feelings of sadness and agitation. Other than that i've been doing better since my panic attack days.  I guess just the troubles of life makes me sad…also the fact that I haven't had any sun.
