anxiety management technique & cure...

11 years ago 0 101 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Davit,
My experience with medicines is not good.Actually I experience that circumstances are my medicines.Whenever circumstances & conditions are favourable then the level of anxiety is quite less or even null also. After leaving my job I left all my medicines;reason they did not help me in my negative circumstances;with too many side effects.I have now switch over to alternative therapy namely homeaopathic & ayurvedic which is common in my country.Really do not know about the success rate but sticking over it from last two months. It is believed they produce slow but steady result.Along with this I am also practicing yoga, breathing relaxation technique, morning walk, exercise, reading & understanding spritiual books like bhagwat gita..I found from last week that practising daily 1 hr of morning walk & light exercise will act as natural antidepressent & able to produce anti anxiety results. The only thing is disciplene of all such activities in a very strict & orderly manner.
CBT as you stated is quite necessary for treatment of anxiety & mental weakness. But that it produce some positiveness when we give a lot of time to it.This will be difficult when we are again back in  job & routine life.
I believe in producing walls of cement but fear if my walls developing merely of soil.Reason being walls of soil collapses soon without offering any resistance to external forces.

If CBT doesn't work then it is possible you are out of balance with one of the chemicals in the brain and you will need to take medication to get this balance right. I don't like the word "antidepressant" because they are more than that and sometimes not that at all. Sometimes the antidepressant or a mood stabilizer is only needed to help CBT and can be stopped later. Taking one is not a bad thing, sometimes it is necessary, like a diabetic taking insulin. Sometimes it is just that you don't produce enough of certain chemicals. I personally would try everything CBT has to offer first because it can take a lot of trial and error to find the right medicine.
I can not take SSRI's but can take Tricyclics. I would personally leave the Benzodiazapenes till the last having had a bad experience with them. But then this really is between you and your doctor.
I understand about anxiety causing you to fall behind in your career. It is a common complaint of anyone who has had this for very long. I could have done so much more and been so much more without this condition. It is not too late.
There is no guaranty that anxiety will not come back but CBT allows it to be tolerable and of short duration.  Some people do actually have it go away and never come back. I have a couple of close friends, one from this site who have had amazing success. One is doing very well in a new career. It can happen. Two  will take medication possibly for life, one definitely. I also know three people taking medication for the wrong reason. (they don't want to do CBT.) But most of the people I know doing CBT get to live a normal life. Some are still working at it. It can be a long road. But I think if you stick with it, it does work. I am proof of that.

Davit,
Its nice to hear from you everytime I post. Thanks for your gud words.
Actually I find anxiety as one of the disability;as there are physical disabilities. The problem is that I dont accept this disability & I try to behave as a normal person who is constantly chasing up for his worthy goals. You said correct that at very first step the anxiety as a part of our personality is to be accepted. But then difficult for us to accept at a next level. That you find yourself unable to perform in your work due to anxiety. You find yourself unable to take small decisions to move forward your work.
You find yourself that you are far back in the race of your carrer. Everything you build up by struggling your anxiety in last 8 yrs is gone at sudden. At last the anxiety wins & again you find yourself returned to where you have started.
I sometimes find this fight as long lasting & till life.

Vincenza is right about a therapist, an hour a week, one on one can give you a lot of answers. In the mean time you have us.

Remember panic always opens up Fight or flight. Always... That being the key, how you treat it dictates how long it will last, whether it is normal panic from a new situation or a self inflicted panic attack. A trigger is just a trigger, making it a panic attack is due to a series of learned conditions.
There are two ways to use fight but only one works. Getting angry is true fight. Fighting it in the form of trying to not accept it is actually flight. Yoga is a relaxation technique if done right as relaxation. Done wrong it is flight and will prolong it.
Accepting it is the first key. Accepting it will happen again is the second. Using coping skills such as all of those you mentioned can be the third if; and this is important; if you are using them to relax and let the fear go. Not as a hiding place. If you are doing yoga and checking continuously to see if the anxiety is there then it will be. But if you accept that it is there and use yoga, or any of your relaxation techniques as relaxation and have faith that they will work then they will. Have patience, this new way of thinking (CBT) takes time to get established in your mind like all new things.
Knowing that you will probably be back where you started when you go back to work is like knowing an enemy is over the hill. It gives you something to prepare for and a better chance of winning the fight.
To answer your questions. Anxiety is a learned condition based on a genetic predisposition to it based on how your family is. It is a small grain of knowledge that comes as a survival skill when you are born. It is part of your DNA characteristic. How you build on it dictates how it will be. It can be changed, for better or worse. This is why not all children of the same parents are the same. Other than twins which have closer DNA.
Anger. This is because you are turning the anger towards yourself because you have a situation you don't know how to cure. Turn the anger towards the anxiety instead. Use it for fight rather than flight. Accept the situation and fight it not yourself. Accept it is there and then do all the relaxation things as that, relaxation not hiding. (I'm not supposed to tell people they are hiding)
To use one of Shari's analogies. You can tip toe around the dragon and do that all your life or you can take a big stick and beat the crap out of it and chain it up.
You are fighting something not entirely of your making. (core belief)
CBT lets you sort out the thoughts in such a way that you think more positive and can better handle anxiety to the point where it doesn't bring up the unwanted symptoms and if they do surface you have the tools to make them go away.
Is this confusing? Anything I can expand on with examples from my own journey?
One suggestion, worry less about it and relax more. It takes time but with diligence it goes away. As an Engineer you must know that for something to work it has to follow a set of rules. Deviate and it falls apart.
Another thing that will prolong this is pressure from family or friends or yourself to not be like this. Put these pressures at the bottom of the list and get better first. They will disappear with the anxiety.

I sometimes really bad & embarrased about my anxiety.Actually it increases whenever I try to stop it.I left my job due to this reason only as I was not able to manage with my anxiety.I remember my friends used to humiliate me because of this very characteristics;but unfortunately I can't share my weakness with them.
During these days I am religiously following activities like yoga, exercise, morning walk, doing my homework etc to keep myself in control. But I fear with future.Does this anxiety will return again when I will be back to my job?Don't know ;but this thought sometimes makes me more sad & full of fear.
Does this anxiety is an integral part of our personality/foundation or is it an inbuilt characteristics?
Sometimes I feel more pain when I get angry about this characteristics?
Any suggestions what to do or how to manage it in more effective manner?

Hi rohit131,

I'm sorry to hear you are feeling unable to fight the symptoms of panic & anxiety.
What helped you in the past?  Has anything changed in your life that has resulted in feeling a heightened sense of anxiety?  Have you sought additional help from a therapist?
I recommend working through the program on the site - hopefully you will find news tools and strategies to work through this difficult time.  Many members have found it very helpful to minimize/manage their anxiety and panic attacks.

Cured is a strange word and means different things to different people. In some just managing is a cure.
So to make it simple, this condition, (since it is not a disease) can be managed to the full extent that you function normally. Even to the point that you do it subconscious. The more subconscious the more likely you will get setbacks which is why you still need coping skills even when it seems gone. Because we have survival skills we carry over from an older time when they were needed we tend to think negative first then positive when the negative isn't necessary. (like crossing a busy street) Too much stress can bring on too much negative to the point it turns into panic which without coping skills can turn into an attack. Mild panic is normal, it is just your mind checking to be sure all is okay. An attack is your memory taking you to a time when it might not have been and keeping you from accepting that this time it is different. CBT gives you the skills to stop this. How well you can do this depends on how well you learn it. But for everyone it is doable if they just do it.

Davit.

Ps, One of the reasons panic turns into an attack is because the information is incomplete leaving no reason for the fight or flight reflex to shut down. It happens most often when a person is tired. Often at night. The other reason is fixating, (replaying something over and over) leaving no reason for the F or F to shut down. Like a song stuck in your head, the only way to get rid of it is to replace it with something else.

I have been a victim of anxiety & panic disorders as long as 17 yrs. They disturbed me without any strong reason.I am now fnding myself unable to fight against them.Seemed to be tired of such disorders & they brought lot of disturbances in normal life.
To how much extent they can be cured /managed for living a stress free & peaceful life?
