Welcome Lulu36
If you want support...you are at the right place!!!
I'm a 56 yr-old Grandma, smoked 30 + years, quit once cold-turkey for ten years, and like a fool during a divorce and early menopause started back...
Have tried several times to quit for the last 5-6 yrs using everything except laser therapy...with No Success...until....
"Chantix"...it's amazing!!
You will have some cravings as the weeks go by, but do not smoke...
remember every puff will delay the withdrawal, and produce more craving.
Do your homework here with the tools on the left...find out what your triggers are...and deal with them.
There was nothing in my day that I didn't associate a cigarett with...so my whole day was a trigger...I was a chain smoker.
The phone/coffee: I replaced the smoke with a straw to chew on or a piece of black licorice.
I make sure I eat a granola bar with my coffee before I have my Chantix...(make sure you eat before you take it)
Since I did quit for 10 years...I feel experienced in knowing about cravings...(cold turkey was the hardest way to quit.
See my quit meter below,
I found as the first week went by "without a smoke"..my main trigger was walking past the dining room table (wierd hugh?), so...
I hung up my little 3X4 index card with capital letters in Red...N.O.P.E....(NOT ONE PUFF EVER) to remind me if I took a puff...it would mean more of these fat-tongue in cheek cravings...
Also, we use smoking as a mask to subdue anger, anxiety, and stress...so be very observant of your feelings...during these craves and don't be afraid to get a little assertive in your interactions with others...if you need to!
You are taking the first step to gain control...Keep the Quit!!!

Ann,
You are going to do fine! With a month behind you and the innocent smell of your granddaughter beside you...
"YOU CAN'T FAIL"!!! LOL
Have a great trip and watch your Son and Daughter in-law smile at the "new you". (just don't rag them out about smoking...they will quit when they are ready)
Your Quit will enable you the tools to keep your granddaughter from smoking...and she will look up to you as an example.
(if Grandma can quit...maybe Mom and Dad will too!)
Go to the beach if you can and breathe some of that ocean breeze..
I used to live in Florida (St.Pete/Clearwater area)...March should be starting to warm up there.
You can't smoke in Florida restaurants...so might be a good idea to go to some frequently.
Welcome..welcome..welcome...

Interesting,
I've been through menopause and I don't care what the experts say... it starts working on you in your mid to late 30's.
Mild hot flashes start, your periods get heavier, your sex drive changes (ummm), your moods start fluctuating...
and doctors look for a dry vagina...to see if your hormones are changing...which is so stupid. "
(Don't they realize that you may be producing an abundance of a hormone as opposed to it drying up?)
Menopause is hormonal related (progestren,estrogen,testostrom)
so is diabetes/hypoglycemia high sugar/low sugar(insulin)
"only my opinion, but I think they are related"
Diet...is the most important thing we can do for ourselves.
Apples are great, sweet potatoes also and one more thing "Flax Seed"
(I use a coffee grinder and have one tablespoon a day...with cereal or in my juice)..it is part of the omega oils discussed.
...chocolate does have its benefits too
When we quit smoking, our body has to clean the mess up some way...and it needs good nutrition...to grease the wheels of healing!
Shingles: Usually an adult (who has the dormant shingle virus)is exposed to the chicken pox virus from a child and causes the virus to erupt in the adult,
but...also and I know this for a fact (my sister in-law is a nurse who contracted shingles from a nursing home and absolutely gets hysterical if anyone even calls her with news of someone with either virus or a noirmal case of herpes (herpes are related as well). She had to retire from nursing because of it.
I'm having the sugar craves too. I bought some granola bars to have with my coffee in the mornings. I used to smoke with the coffee...yuck!!
Now the Quaker Man is my morning mate!
You'll get through this...auntdeb

Abe...where are you?
I couldn't use the patch either...it interfered with my sleep "big time".
But...I also couldn't face going cold-turkey again either.
so...I went to the Dr and he prescribed Chantix...it's working great.
Come back to us for imput, please don't lose your Quit!

glasgow_guy,
Good for You... self-assertion will start growing as you gain control. (Try not to be too tough on your wife though)
Gaining control and keeping it..
eat smart
exercise
endure the craves (they will only last for moments)
(each time you get through a crave, know that the next one will be a little further away)
Going back to work, keep a positive attitude and remember..."your Quit is yours, not your co-workers"
they have to decide for themselves when "their Time is right"
Be cheerful, confident, and happy...set an example for them!!
good luck...and come here often...
