Myth or Fact?

Myth: If you wait it out, your depression will always go away.

Fact: If you're suffering from depression, it might not just go away. For some people, if it isn't treated, their depression can last months, or even years.

Still alive

Hi brightsunnyday,

Sounds like you're going through a rough time now. During this difficult time, be kind and gentle with yourself. Lack of concentration is a common when you are experiencing depression. As your depression lifts, your concentration will return.

You're doing the program which is fantastic. Also you know that your moods follow your menstrual cycle. During the menstrual cycle women experience a change in hormones, which has an effect a woman's moods. Its great that you've been able to identify this.

I encourge you to continue challenging your negative thoughts, it is a process. Your family may think they are true, but do you believe they are?

Depressed people can´t have relationships.

Hi brightsunnyday,

Depression can make relationships, especially intimate relationships difficult. When you are depressed , you can experience a lack of energy, concentration and being able to enjoy things that once made you happy.

However, individuals who are depressed can most certainly have relationships. Relationships are about communicating our needs and feelings to the other person. How can you communicate to the people in your life what you need from them during this difficult time?

The food and mood connection

Hi Members,

I wanted to share an article I recently read called. “The food and mood connection.” The article discussed how the food we consume affects our mood. The authors state that food rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, low glycemic foods, and chocolate have all been associated with improved moods. In addition, the authors note “Combining food such as carbohydrates and protein increases the level of serotonin in your brain.” (Nelson and Zeratsky, 2009). Serotonin is a neurotransmitter in your brain, which are chemicals released in your brain and it is associated with calm moods.

The article is talking about a connection between the body and mind. Though the two were once regarded as independent from each other in the medical community, many people believe that two are interdependent. If we consume foods that our good for us, we experience positive physical effects. If we feel physically well, we are better able to deal with challenges. A healthy body, lead to a healthy mind and vise versa.

Members, what are your thoughts on the body-mind connection?

Myth or Fact?

Myth: Spending scarce resources for treating depression is wasteful expenditure when there are so many other communicable and non-communicable diseases needing attention and which are still not under control in developing countries.

Fact:
Depression causes considerable suffering among patients worldwide. The burden caused by psychiatric disorders has been underestimated in the past. At present, out of the 10 leading causes of suffering worldwide, five are psychiatric conditions, including depression. By 2020, depression will become the second largest cause of suffering -- next only to heart disease.

Rebuilding Self Esteem 2

Hi members,

You've identified a really important behaviour here, specifically throughing away or hidding the signs of your accomplishments. The example of keeping letters of recognition in a visible place is very powerful. It becomes harder to think negatively about yourself, if you have proof that you're an accomplished individual staring right at you.

What are some other things you can do to remind yourself of all your accomplishments?

Rebuilding Self Esteem 3

Hi ~m,

Sometimes its hard to do these self nurturing activities because they have not been part of your daily life. Changing your routing takes time and practice, and with time , you'll be able to incorporate these positive activities in your daily life. You have a great attitude, and that will bring you a long way!

There may be a variety of reasons why you don't think it is OK to take care of yourself. I would encourage you to remind yourself that you are important, and worth taking care of yourself. You deserve to feel good about yourself.

Take a look at section 4 of the program, as it focuses on negative thoughts.

Preventable Threats

Members,

The article “Men’s health: Preventing your top 10 threats” (2009), by the Mayo staff clinic, reports that threats to men’s health are mostly preventable. Number one of the list is heart disease, and the list of suggestions includes not smoking, physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight and drinking in moderation. Number two is lung cancer, and of course, not smoking and using tobacco products, along with avoiding second smoke is recommended. In the other preventable threats, not smoking and exercising is a repeated suggestion.

Members, you’re all improving your life in some way, shape or form. Through your journey, have you considered your overall health? Is your overall well being important to you or are you content with focusing on the problem you are currently tackling.

Furthermore, how capable do you feel in preventing disease?
