Hubby

Hi Sparky,

Thank you for sharing! I'm glad to hear that your husband is getting better!

We're happy to have been here for you this year.  I can hear the dedication and power in your voice. You're ready to quit, and you have the strength to do so!

What have you learned from your attempts? What will you do differently this time?

Physical or Mental ???

Hi 4th time is a charm,

Sounds like you've been on a rollercoaster ride with your cravings. Good on you for sticking to your goal and not smoking! It can be incredibly difficult to fight the temptation, but you're doing it!

Cravings are both physical and mental. When you quit smoking, your body is no longer receiving nicotine and other chemicals and wants these. This is physical. You have also learned to associate smoking with certain situations. For example, if smoke when you drank, you mind has made a connection between these two ethings. So you might crave smoking when you drink for these reasons. This is a mental. However, the physical and mental are linked. So its a little bit of both.

The program has a section Preparing for Withdrawl. There you can find a list of withdrawl symptoms , how long they last and what you can do.

Are you rewarding yourself for quitting? What do you enjoy about not smoking?

Keep the quit!

Image is in Crisis

Hi Alice in Wonderland,

You're making progress and realizing a lot of things about yourself. This is great, and at the same , as you've said, its terrifying!

Quitting smoking has made you start worrying about your weight, which is why you started smoking. Now you want to quit smoking, but worry about you weight and image issues. So its a vicious cycle.

Its great that you are aware that smoking can trigger your weight and image issues. If you are concerned about these, I would encourage you to use the Healthy Weight Centre. You can use this program as you quit, to help you manage your weight. Talk to you dietician and see if there are changes you can make to help you stick to your weight  goals while quitting.

Are you scared that you will start smoking again if you gain weight or are you just scare of gaining weight?

Myth or Fact?

Myth: Patients with heart disease should not use the nicotine patch or gum.

Fact: Given the seriousness of their medical condition, cardiac patients who cannot quit should be among those first considered for NRT. However, NRT dosage should be closely monitored by the physician.

Just quit 3 days ago...

Hi Ellie,

Congrats on three days of smoke free!

Its very common when you have just quit to get cravings , especially during the times when you use to smoke, like after dinner. Now that you're not smoking , try doing something else when you were smoking. Do something you enjoy, or give yourself a reward. It will help make these times a lot easier, and even pleasurable.

Start doing the program as soon as you can. There are great tools to help you stay smoke free! You'll be running that marathon before you know it!

Keep the quit!
