Myth or Fact?

Hey j,

Glad you liked the question. Do you find it helpful to be aware of what are your triggers? Can you plan ahead? What parts of the program are working the best for you!

Glad to see you are still around. Hope you are noticing improvements.

New symptoms? How To Combat Them?

Hi Dtaber,

Be gentle with yourself! You are doing so well! Congratulate yourself for taking the steps to get help. Here are some ideas for you, related to Cognitive Behavior Therapy.

The following ten questions will help you to challenge any anxious thoughts. When you have an anxious thought, answer some of these 10 questions:

1. Is it "true"?
2. How do I know it’s true?
3. Is it 100% true? (remember something that is 75% or 99% true is
    not 100% true)
4. What's the evidence for it being true?
5. What’s the evidence against it being true?
6. Has it ever happened before?
7. What's different now?
8. If it were true, how bad would it really be?
9. What's the worst thing that could happen?
10. If the worst thing happened, how bad would it really be?

Please, members, feel free to add any tips or strategies you find helpful when trying to challenge your anxious thoughts.

Journaling

Did you know
Journaling your daily anxiety, triggers and mood helps to reveal problem areas (such as stresses and emotions that may lead to a panic attack) and is the first step towards improving behaviour.

Extremely tough situation on the horizon

Hi Jake,

I don't think you should view this situation as a set-back- it will be a good and challenging exposure situation! Can you meet with your counsellor before the meeting day to work out a strategy? Can you continue to work alone until then? I'm thinking that if you medication is in your system before the drive, then it will be on board to prevent an attack in the meeting as well. If you feel it starting to wear off, perhaps you can be prepared for that with breathing techniques, etc. Does this sound do-able to you? What else helps you in other anxiety-provoking situations? Can you incorporate some of these into your day?

Tracking, challenging, changing negative thoughts

In your quest to track your negative thoughts, you may have had trouble challenging them and you may now be wondering how to change them.

The following 10 questions will help you to challenge any negative thought. When you have a negative thought, try to answer these 10 questions:

  1. What’s the evidence that the thought is true?
  2. What’s the evidence that the thought is not true?
  3. What is the worst possible thing that could happen and how would you cope if it did happen?
  4. What’s the best possible thing that could happen?
  5. What would most likely happen and how would you cope if that happened?
  6. What’s another way of thinking about this situation? What else could be going on?
  7. What would you tell a friend of yours if they were in this situation and had the same negative thought?
  8. What’s the effect of believing the negative thought?
  9. What would happen if you didn’t believe the negative thought?
  10. What are some alternative thoughts in this situation?

Today we encourage you to look at your tracking results and share what patterns you have identified.

Davit, thanks for your commendation of our program! We think it is comprehensive as well.

Good discussion. Remember that there is no right or wrong with this- different things work differently for different people at different stages in their lives! But please continue to help each other in a supportive manner. There are many others in this community who are not posting but are taking solace in your words and encouraging stories.
