To those who quit in March 07

Rachel, you'll feel better soon. Probably with-in 24 hours or so. "Normal" is down the road a stretch, and it won't be what you recognised as 'normal' up until now. Some of that will change markedly, for the better. Hang in there, Rachel. I know it's no fun for you right now, but you have to get through this. Take it an hour at a time... take it 10 minutes at a time... don't worry about tomorrow. What you're experiencing right now will start to dull considerably, and soon.

Growin' up is hard to do.

Healer, sometimes I feel like a nerve that's been stripped bare of it's protective sheath. The world seem like a far too hostile and foreign place. Something I've been aware of since the beginning of my quit is this sense of disorientation; "Now where do I hide?" And the answer is, "I don't. Not anymore." Now my 'safe place' is acceptance of things as they are, and the will to respond to them as they are. Wonderful post, Healer. Thank-you! How had smoking come to effect you physically, emotionally and psychologically, just prior to quitting smoking? What has changed since then, if anything?

A Question

Hi, Freedom. OK, this is interesting. It could be that your smoking was actually preventing you from getting canker sores, and now that you've quit, you've lost your protection. Awright, I know that isn't what you wanted to hear, and that may not be the case at all... or it may be... go to see your doctor about it for the straight goods. Anyway, this is what I found on the net, and a link to the site: "APHTHOUS ULCERS AND FEVER BLISTERS. Recurring aphthous ulcers, or canker sores, are exquisitely painful and very common, affecting 10-20% of the general population and as much as 50% of health professionals. Rather than producing or inducing this ulcerative disorder, tobacco smoking seems to prevent its occurrence or diminish its effects. Aphthae frequently begin to appear or reappear in persons who stop smoking, and almost all (96%) affected individuals are nonsmokers. Canker sores are likewise less prevalent in smokeless tobacco users than in nonusers. The reasons for this "protection" are unclear, but may be related to an increased mucosal keratinization or a reduced immune attack against the bacterial antigens thought to trigger ulcer formation." Don't speak if you haven't quit....

I don't know what planet your sister lives on, but anywhere that someone can quit smoking in three days and be completely over the cravings... is a charmed place, for sure. Anyway, Jaz, as I'm sure you know... it really doesn't matter what she thinks... or if she thinks. All that matters is that you're in the groove; that you're doing this for you, whether people support you, whether they understand or not. This is one of those things that can work only one way and that's, "no matter what". You've made a decision to save your own life, and you can't let anyone or anything come between you and your committment to do that. If your sister's got it all wrong, don't worry about it. Life will probably straighten her out. Life does that. But if you need to talk to people who actually know the score, who know what it's like for you as you create this new life for yourself... we're right here. :) Day 5. Just live that. Live 'your' life, today. Because that's what this is all about; your life. Day one for me

Well, 5 days doesn't make me a seasoned quitter... but on the other hand, days 1 thru 4 are very fresh in my memory. :) First, welcome Dupe! I think you're going to be very happy here...well, when you're not miserable that is. :) I quit for 4 months a few years ago, and this is my second shot at it. I can only tell you what my experience of the first few days has been. It's rough. I'm using the patch too, but even with the patch... it gets pretty tense at times. For me day 3 was the worst. After that it got better. Yesterday was day 4 for me and I actually had a very good day. Today it's been a little tougher, but I didn't get enough sleep and I think that's played into it. The usual things people will tell you are to drink lots of water, suck on candies, take deep breaths when the cravings come, go for walks... do things that will serve to distract you from the cravings... and will defuse the triggers. But no matter what you do, you're probably gonna be on a bit of an emotional roller-coaster for a while. At times things will level out and other times you may feel that you're all over the board. Just determine that no matter what, in good times and in bad, you're going to keep your eyes front and not look back. And we'll be here. We're all on your side!
