I thought having and raising four children was hard. Facing triple by-pass surgery (last year) was harder. It was a little scary. I knew I wouldn't know what was happening and if I woke up I'd probably be just fine. This, by far, has to be the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. You are aware of it every minute of the day and night. You can't turn it off. It's amazing how much it can consume ones life. Everywhere I go I see people smoking. On the street or when I'm driving I notice if the car next to me has someone who's smoking (I never noticed before or I just didn't care). I keep repeating I'm an ex-smoker now. I know I have a long way to go. Just wondering if and when you actually stop thinking about it. I hope its soon. The cravings are not really that bad. I seem to be able to handle them. I just would like to think about something other than cigs. I keep going to the posts and it does pass the time and give wonderful advice. Any advice from you long time non-smokers?

2tone,
I did stop smoking for two months after my surgery. I know its crazy but I was thinking like an addict not rationally. The surgery should have scared the sh... out of me. I had an argument with my hubby and had left the half empty pack in a drawer. Needless to say I reached for the cigs. Now I know better. There are no cigs in my house now! I'm going to try and focus on myself instead of the smokers. I went out to dinner this evening and feel much better. Thanks to all of you for your support. I'll keep you posted.

Hi I'm Gismo,
My quit date also is 1/1. I'm going on day 4 now. It's starting to get easier. Last October(2005), I quit for two months after a triple by-pass. Unfortunately, it didn't last and I started smoking again. Stupid huh! My downfall was that I left a pack of cigs in the drawer. One day when I was having a really bad day, I reached for just one!!!. Well here I am today going through this again. I know better this time and threw them all out even the lighters. You can't smoke them if you don't have them. I know I can do this and this site is a wonderful place to get support. Good luck to everyone.

I know exactly what you mean. You feel like you're going around in circles. Every part of your life has been associated with smoking, so when you stop it's like losing your best friend. The one you watched tv with, the one you talked on the phone with, etc. Believe me, smoking is not your friend, it's your enemy. We are your friends now and you can do it. Try and think of something you always wanted to do but didn't find the time to do. Maybe that will help you get motivated. It will get easier. Good luck

Welcome Mommy,
You will do fine tomorrow. Stay close to the site and read lots of posts. My first smoke in the morning was my toughest. Try and change your routine. If you usually have coffee first, take a shower instead, etc. This is a wonderful site to come to for support. We will be cheering you on!

You can do this! Keep saying that to yourself over and over and over. Try taking a relaxing shower or bath.
