should I plan on a couple vacation days for withdrawal?

What about planning your quit day for the 16th instead (a Friday) and that way you'll have the weekend to get through what may be the most difficult days?

The Three-Headed Dragon

I wish your brother in law well Jim . . . and I agree that tobacco products should be illegal.  Imagine if some food product for example caused tha amount of illness and suffering that tobacco does.  The item would be off the shelves in a blink.

What if? Part II

Day 146 and I will not smoke today.  But I will go to gravity class at the gym today and do a good vigorous 1/2 hour cardio, especially now that I've nibbled on the pre-Christmas cookies at the office.

Hypnotism

Hi Shannon,

Anxiety was a huge issue for me in the early stages of my quit. There was the psychological anxiety associated with the fear of losing my emotional crutch and the fear of not being successful in quitting.  What helped with this was positive self talk i.e. reminding myself of other situations in life where I felt like this but succeeded and just generally reminding my self of all of the positive reasons for quitting ad all of the negatives associated with smoking.

Then there was the very real physical anxiety i.e. light-headed, sweaty palms, a feeling of losing control, irritabiltiy and depression, etc.etc.  Yoga helped relieve a lot of the physical anxiety and when I couldn't do that (e.g. at work) deep breathing and simply going for a short vigorous walk or up and down a flight of stairs helped eliminate these unpleasant feelings.

Daily Stats Parade

Looking forward to another smoke free day.  What a difference when you get a good night's sleep!  I'm in a great mood and the furthest thing from my mind is pooluting myself and my environment with one of those stinkers.

Hypnotism

Like Lolly said you can always reduce your nicotine intake slowly even by cutting a piece of gum in half.  I also am using the NRT and have the benefit of a smoking cessation counsellor at the local hospital who I can call any time and if I don't, she follows up with me every 2 weeks.  One thing she told me was not to push myself, I can wean myself off the gum as slowly as I need to.  We all want to get over the addiction part, but it's not worth the risk of relapsing with a cigarette.  Afterall, as long as you're not smoking you're not getting the thousands of other harmful chemicals that are in cigarettes.  Also, she told me that you are only actually absorbing a percentage (forgot the exact number) of the dosage of nicotine indicated on the gum, which is a lower percentage than what you absorb from a cigarette..

What Not To Say

What a great topic!  Here are some statements I have personally experienced that were very frustrating and even triggering:

1. It's been long enough now, have one of mine, I'm sure it won't hurt.
2. If you're going to be this cranky, why don't you just go back to smoking.
3. Looks like you've put on a few pounds since you quit.
4. Cheer up, it's not the end of the world.
5. If you're still using the NRTs, what's the point, you might as well just smoke then. (actual statement by my family doctor 3 months after quitting smoking)
6. Why don't you drop the NRTs, afterall, the withdrawl is only 5 days.
7. I quit cold turkey when I had pneumonia, I don't know why you can't just do the same.

The list is endless.  These are the few most extreme ones that came to my mind.

Quit day set for 11/19/2012 Looking for support

I too am very encouraged at hearing that someday I won't even think of smoking.  I have the experience of quitting drinking over 3 years ago which parallels this, as an addiction is an adddiction, regardless of the substance.  I know I hardly ever think of drinking anymore.  I can go to social events where other people drink and I have my mineral water and the thought of having a drink doesn't even enter my mind.  The only times I've had the odd passing thought is when I see someone have a cold beer on a hot summer day. . . but that's all it is, is a passing thought.

This Time I?m Quiting Forever

I initially put on a total of about 10 lbs. and that's a lot for me because I weighed 138 lbs. before quitting.  I haven't taken it all off (only about 3 lbs.) but at least I stopped gaining.  As Jim said, I increased my activity level and tried to eat lower fat items.  Also, I was going crazy with the sweets and my smoking cessation counsellor suggested I increase my protein intake, especially after workouts.  This hugely helped in reducing the cravings for sweets.  I try to get the increased protein through food that is also not high in fat (e.g. salmon, hardboiled egg, lentils) and through things like protein bars/shakes.
